Obituary for Lowell Max Schissel

Worthington, MN

Lowell Max Schissel, age 75, was born on July 5, 1934 in Lismore Village of Nobles County, Minnesota to Alexander and Margaret (Knips) Schissel. He attended High School and Junior College in Worthington. Lowell was in the United States Army from 1953 to 1961. He met Terry Smart of Oxford while stationed in England. They were married at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Worthington on February 22, 1958.
Lowell worked for Metz Baking Company for over thirty years. He sold and delivered Old Home Bread to local stores and restaurants, often before the sun rose. He took pride in his work and that was reflected in the loyalty of his customers.
Lowell was well known for his immaculate lawn, which he kept cut to perfection especially for games of croquet. He was an accomplished water skier. He took such great care of his home. He loved building things and working with his hands, skills which he taught himself and his sons. His vehicles were always kept spotlessly clean. Lowell’s grilling, his waffles, and his homemade vanilla ice cream are legendary in the family.
He remained active in his retirement with his family, his church, and his community. Lowell was an American Legion member. He helped take care of Freedom Shore Park and the Veterans Memorial and was on the housing board for the Atrium building. He was active with Habitat for Humanity. He served as a session member and was on the finance committee for the Westminster Presbyterian Church. Most recently Lowell helped build the garage and the sound system booth at the church. As an accomplished handy man, Lowell was always willing to help out family, friends and neighbors.
Lowell suddenly passed from us on January 8, 2010 in Largo, Florida. His greatest joy came from his family. Lowell is survived by his wife, Terry Schissel, Worthington; his children, Cathy (Brian) Stofferahn of Crystal, MN; Peter (Holly) Schissel of Excelsior, MN; and David (Kim) Schissel of Wadena, MN; seven grandchildren, and two great-granddaughters; two sisters, Marcia (Don) Basche, Nancy (Don) Kizershot and one brother, Jim (Rose) Schissel, and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and brother Jerry (Wanda) Schissel.
A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, January 23rd at 1:00 p.m., at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 230 Clary Street, in Worthington, MN, with Pastor James Krapf officiating.
Casket bearers will be Don Basche, Don Kizershot, John Pellegrino, Marv Rall, Russ Rickers and Jim Schissel.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 22, 2010, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington.
