Lorraine E. Huehn, age 93, of Round Lake MN, passed away on Sunday, July 23, 2017. She was born on March 10, 1924 in Sioux Valley, MN to the late William and Tressie (Jacobsen) Jochims.
After graduating from high school, she entered the U.S. Navy April 1944. Upon completing a shortened boot camp, she was sent to Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland for nurse’s training. She ultimately became a Pharmacist Mate in the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). As a PhM1 stationed at the Naval Hospital Shoemaker in California she cared for wounded Sailors and Marines. Her first ward was the malaria ward but then she went onto working in several other wards and assisted the doctors with sick calls. She eventually moved into the personnel department before the hospital was closed. Her last three months with the WAVES were at a military hospital in San Leandro, California until her discharge in July 1946. After being discharged, Lorraine returned home to Minnesota.
Lorraine then married a dapper young man Clifford “Hooley” Huehn on September 29, 1946. They were happily married for 70 years and their love for each other was an inspiration to all who knew them.
She has worked for Round Lake School District and was City Clerk for Round Lake for many years but it was being a wife, mother and homemaker that made her the happiest.
Lorraine is survived by her spouse Hooley; her sons, David (Ana) of Lake Jackson TX, Robert (Suzanne) of La Crosse WI, and Thomas of Plymouth, MN; a daughter, Susan Wilson of Minnetonka, MN; daughter-in-law, Shannon Huehn of Wenatchee, WA; two grandchildren, Michael of Wenatchee, WA and Jaclyn of Portland OR, and two step grandsons, Ibrahim and Jibriel of Lake Jackson TX.
Lorraine was the last of her family and was preceded in death by a daughter, Elaine and her son, Bruce.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 5, 2017, at 10:00 a.m., at Bethel Lutheran Church in Round Lake, MN. The family will be greeting friends and relatives at the church prior to the service from 9-10 a.m. Burial, with military honors, will follow at the Round Lake Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to American Cancer Society, ALS Association, Bethel Lutheran Church or Round Lake American Legion.
