Obituary for Leona Fenske

Leona E. Fenske left us on Sunday, August 12, 2018 to join the heavenly angels. She was born on October 11, 1915 in Appleton, MN to Fred and Bertha Vitense, the eldest of their family of 5 girls. They lived in several small towns around the Mpls-St Paul area. Moving to Worthington with her family after she graduated from high school she attended cosmetology school in Omaha but then met Gary Fenske and became a farmer’s wife March 31, 1936. They were married for 61 years. Gary preceded her in death in June 1997.
After leaving the farm life she started a new career which led to 25 plus years of employment at Campbell’s Soup Co. in Worthington until retirement.
Anyone who came to visit had to have a cup of coffee and homemade goodies. Her pies were like no other. She was an excellent cook and baker. We all have a recipe or two that she passed on.
They enjoyed their retirement years, summers in the north camping with friends and visiting family and winters in South Texas. They made several trips to California to visit family and attend family events.

In 2015 she celebrated her 100th Birthday at the Windom Hillside Manor where she lived independently with the help of family.
She is the last of her generation in our family to leave us. Four Sisters, all of her Sister in laws and Brother in laws have preceeded her in death.

She is survived by her children, Donna Fleace (Robert), Goleta, Ca., Marilyn Flatebo (Dean), Windom, Mn., and James Fenske (Bertha) Oxnard, Ca. where she was cared for when she could no longer live by herself. She so enjoyed being outside in the backyard and she was out there almost every day.
She is survived by lots of Grandchildren. She loved them all, 14 Grandchildren, 26 Great Grandchildren, 34 Great, Great Grandchildren, and 6 Great, Great, Great Grandchildren. She has numerous nieces and nephews of which she tried to keep up on their current status.
We will miss her but we feel blessed that she was with us for 102 years. We know she will be watching over us.

Visitation will be at the Benson Funeral Home on Thursday, August 23rd from 5-7PM.
Funeral Services will be held at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Worthington where she has been a member for many years on Friday, August 24th at 11:00 AM.
Interment will be at the Garden of Memories Cemetery following the service.
