Obituary for Leo Henry Baumgard

Brewster, MN

      Leo Henry Baumgard, age 89, was born on March 16, 1926, in Heron Lake, MN, the son of Paul and Lena (Grunow) Baumgard. He was baptized and confirmed at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Brewster, MN and attended Ewington country school. Leo served in the United States Navy, Seabee division, from January 1945 until July 1946, being stationed in Okinawa. Following his naval discharge, he worked as a hired hand for Fred Sievert, his future brother-in-law. Leo married Ella Sievert on November 1, 1947, in Okabena, MN. Together they raised four children on the family farm located south of Brewster. They retired to the town of Brewster in 1995. Farming was his life’s passion. A devout Christian he faithfully attended church throughout his life. Leo was active in Sievert-Peterson Okabena Legion Post 608. He enjoyed visiting with family, friends, and neighbors. Leo died on Monday, August 31, 2015, at the Minnesota Veteran’s Home in Luverne, MN.

      Leo is survived by his son, Ken (Lori) Baumgard; daughters, Joanne (Jim) Palmer and Jackie (Rich) Molitor; son-in-law, Alan Benz; grandchildren, Andy (Becky) Benz, Angie (Tim) Krebs, Nicole (Dustin) Klein, Justin Palmer, Alex, Nate, Ana, and Akalie Molitor, Dana (Matt) Becker, and Matt (Vickie) Franks; ten great grandchildren; his sister, Dorothy Fiebelkorn, and special friend, Jean Johnson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ella; daughter, Kathy Benz; parents, Paul and Lena Baumgard; brother, Ted Baumgard, and sisters, Nora Defreese and Lillie Bayerkohler.

      Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 5, 2015, at 10:30 a.m., at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Brewster, MN, with Pastor David McDonald officiating. Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Brewster, MN.

      Visitation will be held on Friday, September 4, 2015, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington, MN and also one hour prior to the service at the church.

      Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
