Obituary for Lena Meyer

Reading, Minnesota
Lena Meyer, age 98, of Reading, Minnesota, died on Monday, September 22, 2008, at the Sunset Hospice Cottage in Worthington, Minnesota.
Lena was born on July 26, 1910, in Renville, Minnesota, to Hempe and Lena (Hempen) Meyer.  She attended a country school south of Wilmont and hired out as a housekeeper for various farm families in the area.  Lena married Harm Meyer, Jr. on February 2, 1932, in Rushmore, Minnesota.  They farmed for thirty-five years until they retired and moved to a home in Reading.  Lena worked in the dietary department of the Worthington Regional Hospital for many years.  She was a charter member of Bethel Presbyterian Church in Reading, where she and Harm were custodians for many years.  Lena was involved in the Presbyterian Women’s Group, taught Sunday school, and was a member of the Reading Citizens Center.  She loved her birds, vegetable and flower gardening, and visiting with neighbors and friends.  Her greatest joy was the many quilts she made over the years for her children, grandchildren, family members, and friends.  Lena loved her gospel quartet music, read her Bible, and witnessed her faith on a daily basis.  She was a loving, caring person who will be greatly missed.  Lena moved to Sunshine Apartments for eight years and a year and a half ago, moved to Arnold Memorial Healthcare Center.  She slowly lost her eyesight eight years ago but stayed very active and independent.  She thoroughly enjoyed her two sons, Leroy and Gary, her many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.
Lena is survived by two sons, Leroy (Karen) Meyer, of Reading, Minnesota, and Gary Meyer, of Worthington, Minnesota; five grandchildren; ten great grandchildren, and six great great grandchildren; five step grandchildren; seventeen step great grandchildren, and two step great great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one brother, four sisters, and one infant great grandchild.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 25, 2008, at 1:30 p.m., at the Bethel Presbyterian Church in Reading, Minnesota, with the Rev. Monte Meyer officiating.  Casket bearers will be Bruce Kingery, Jeff Funk, Lyndon Funk, Lance Rogers, Tony Fritz, and Keith Kruse.  Burial will be in the Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 24, 2008, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington.
