Obituary for Laverne Mary Peterson

Worthington, MN

Laverne Mary Peterson, 97, was born on September 15, 1913, in Sioux City, IA, the daughter of Albert and Anna (Juran) Dirksen. Following high school, she began working as a secretary at the Sioux City Stockyards becoming a private secretary to the secretary of the Livestock Exchange Commission. Laverne married Lloyd (Curly) Peterson on September 17, 1941. While he served in the army during World War II, Laverne continued working as a secretary at the stockyards. After the war, Lloyd went back to his job as a livestock buyer for a commission firm at the stockyards until 1952 when they moved, with their two sons, to a farm near Round Lake, MN. Lloyd began working in Worthington and in 1958, Laverne went to work at KWOA Radio writing radio commercials and eventually hosting her own radio show featuring community news items, recipes, etc. At the time the studios were in the basement of the Thompson Hotel so during the Turkey Day Parade, Laverne and other announcers would climb out a window and perch on the roof to broadcast the parade. The family moved to Worthington, living in town for five years before buying an acreage on the edge of Worthington and selling the farm in Round Lake. Laverne left KWOA and went to work at Greely Gas as a home service consultant. She retired in 1979 but in her pursuit of her artistic passion began working at the Nobles County Art Center. Following a fire that destroyed the acreage in 1999 and Lloyd’s death in 2000, she purchased a home in Worthington and continued at the Art Center until ill health forced her to retire again in 2004. She moved in the South Shore Care Center in 2008. Laverne died on Saturday, December 25, 2010, at the South Shore Care Center in Worthington.
Laverne is survived by two sons, Jeffrey (Lana) Peterson of Harris, IA, and Randall Peterson of Worthington, MN; three grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; one brother, Wayne (Dorothy) Dirksen of St. Paul, MN, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
