Obituary for Larry Leo Ruesch

Larry Leo Ruesch (a.k.a. "LTF", "Whiskers") was born July 3, 1936, on the family farm near Fulda, MN, to Robert and Margaret (Nickel) Ruesch. He was baptized and confirmed at St Matthews in Worthington. He worked on the family farm learning the values of hard work and dedication and the virtues of patience and kindness which he passed onto his kids and his grandkids. He was a member of 4-H, FFA and was on the championship church basketball league. Larry graduated from Worthington High School in 1954. He answered the call to join the Army and was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. While there, his barracks were across from an up-and-coming singer named, "Elvis Presley". Larry was honorably discharged as a Private First Class. He returned to the family farm and took a chance in attending a church dance where he met the love of his life. Larry and Peg (Lundahl) were married on August 31, 1963, in Minneapolis at Trinity Lutheran Church. After a honeymoon to San Francisco, they settled north of Worthington where they farmed and raised pigs, cows, chickens, sheep and three kids. Larry loved showing the farm-life to visitors. Larry was an active volunteer serving on the Minnesota State Pork board, Nobles County Pork board, as a Stephen’s Minister, Lutheran Laymen's League, Farm Bureau, Aid Association for Lutherans, and was honored for his 18 years as charter organization representative for Boy's Scout Troop 134. He enjoyed grilling pork and whole-hog roasts. He grilled sausages for the King Turkey Day breakfast, grilled pork chops for the Boy Scouts, Lamperts and the MS support group and even took home second place in a state wide contest for his pork recipe. He loved the Lord was very active in church as an usher and Sunday School Teacher. He began preaching at what was then "Lakehaven" (South Shore), conducted many funerals and filled in as substitute pastor for area churches. He continued preaching at the Prairie House and Southshore until 2018 when Peg entered the nursing home. Larry enjoyed playing Santa for Michael's Steakhouse, nursing homes and schools especially when kids pulled down his fake beard only to discover he sported a real beard. He enjoyed watching sports, listening to "his markets", visiting family and friends and fishing. He rarely called his kids and grandkids by name but rather his nicknames. He enjoyed naming all his animals and used nicknames for the cats and dogs. Being a true German, he loved polkas, Sauerkraut and “Lutheran pop” (beer) especially with his popcorn. Larry delighted in his grandchildren's achievements and would always attend their concerts, county fairs, sporting events, and FFA banquets (he was awarded the “Honorary FFA Degree” from the Worthington FFA chapter). He enjoyed exhibiting his repainted International 706 and his first tractor, the "Super H", with Prairie Reapers. He was famous for his loud voice, "handlebars" (mustache) and his willingness to wave and talk to anyone and everyone. Larry entered the Luverne Veterans Home in May of 2019. He died Thursday, September 5, 2019, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, at the age of 83.
