Kenneth Arthur Hein of Worthington, MN passed away Friday, April 25, at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD from pneumonia. Ken was born March 21, 1928 in rural Buchanan County, IA to Herman and Olga (Strempke) Hein. He was the fourth child of six (4 brothers and 1 sister). Ken attended elementary and high school in Fairbank, IA, graduating in 1945. He served in the U.S. Navy from August 1945 to July 1946, first at Camp Parks, CA and then at Mare Island, CA.

On May 19, 1946 Ken married Ruth Dorothea Ullerich. Following his discharge from the Navy, Ruth and Ken moved to Long Beach, CA where Ken attended the College of Commerce. In July 1948 they moved back to Iowa and lived above a Standard station in Fairbank for approximately a year before moving to Independence, IA. Ken worked for the Independence Produce and Hatchery for nine years before moving to Decorah, IA in 1959 to begin work in the Wapsie Produce and Hatchery. Later, he worked at the Decorah newspapers, as an electrician for Brown Electric, and a salesman for Cobie Office Supply. In May 1965 he began working at Decorah Savings and Loan, advancing to president and chief executive officer in January 1974. Following retirement in 1987, he continued working by repairing small engines and equipment for a business in Decorah. In 1988 they moved to Worthington, MN where Ken worked part time at the YMCA, Colonial Cabinets, and a hardware store. Ken was a gifted woodworker. Family and friends cherish the wooden bowls, crosses, candle holders, and other items he hand crafted.

Ken is survived by his four children: Pat (Rolf) Wangberg of Rochester, MN; Mike (Gabi) Hein of Gainesville, FL; Ted (Brigitte) Hein of Minneapolis, MN; and Dea (Wayne) Klumper of Worthington, MN; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren. He also is survived by two brothers; Jack Hein of Waterloo, IA and Russell Hein of Fort Dodge, IA. Ken was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, Wayne and Robert; and one sister, Miriam (Mary) Werdel.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 pm, Thursday, May 1, 2014 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Worthington, with Rev. Tom Braun officiating. Pallbearers will be: Aaron Wangberg, Dan Klumper, Joe Klumper, Joe Evenson, and Jeremy Armstrong. Burial will be at the Worthington Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Matthew Lutheran Church or the Worthington YMCA.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 30, 2014, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington, MN.
