Obituary for Katherine Hedeen

Worthington, MN

Katherine Pike Hedeen, age 93, died August 9, 2017, in Worthington. She grew up in Sioux City, Iowa and graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1945. Katherine attended graduate school at the University of MN and earned a Master’s Degree in Psychology in 1947. There she met a young law student, Bill Hedeen. They married on September 23, 1950, and Katherine moved to Worthington to join Bill who had started practicing law in 1949.
Katherine was an avid reader, writer, and theatre-goer. From 1966 until 2010 she wrote weekly play reviews of the Okoboji Summer Theatre for the Daily Globe. Katherine also wrote many feature articles and book reviews for the Globe. She had a keen mind for bridge and played in the Worthington Bridge Marathons for many years and, with her partner, often ranked among the top players.
Katherine was an involved member of the community. She belonged to many civic organizations and clubs. She also served on the county library board and was a volunteer reading tutor at Prairie Elementary School. She was especially devoted to PEO Chapter BT and was a PEO member from 1946 until her death. She and Bill received the Chamber of Commerce’s Community Service Award in 1991 for years of service to the Worthington community.
Katherine and Bill began to travel the world in the 1980s. Bill was the travel planner and always eager to see new places, while Katherine relished making new friends on their travels to 71 countries on 6 continents.
Katherine cherished her friendships and, while most of her long-time friends died before she did, she purposefully cultivated new friends who were younger than she. She hosted countless bridge parties, coffee parties, luncheons, and dinners. She was an excellent conversationalist who always made a point of talking less about herself and more about the person she was with.
Katherine is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Margaret and Farid Sabongi of Eagan, Janet and David Gulden of Apple Valley, and grandchildren Michael Gulden and his wife, Kelin Loe, of Northampton, MA, Rachel Gulden of Chicago, IL, and Edward Sabongi of Eagan.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 18, 2017, at 11:00 a.m., at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Worthington, MN, with Pastor Galen Smith officiating. Katherine will be buried alongside Bill at Fort Snelling at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Worthington YMCA or Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
