Obituary for Karl Albert Schafer

Karl Albert Schafer, 86, of Worthington, died on Sunday, April 8, 2007, at the Sunset Hospice Cottage in Worthington.     Karl was born on May 27, 1920, in Oberturkheim, Germany, the son of Robert and Bertha Loeffler Schafer.  He came to the United States in 1923.  The family spent some time in Philadelphia before coming to Worthington.     Karl’s father, Robert, a German butcher by trade, purchased the building at 207 10th St. in February of 1926.  Karl joined his father in the meat business.  In 1963, Karl built the Karley’s Drive In and the grocery store/meat market located on South Shore.  In 1975, he opened Schafer’s Health Food Store on the adjoining property.  During this time, Karl became business partners with Peter Skliris to build the Gobbler Restaurant and operate the Oxford Motel.  Eight years later, Karl moved the Health Food Store back to the original location at 207 10th St., where it is located today.     Karl enlisted in the service in 1941 and served overseas in the European Theatre, including D-day and the Battle of Bastogne.  He returned home in November of 1945.  He married Irma Steuck on December 8, 1946, in Worthington.  They were business partners all of their 60 years.  Karl was a member of the American Legion, Sertoma Club, a life member of the V.F.W. and a charter member of the Elks Lodge and the Worthington County Club.  He was Chairman of the V.F.W. board for 21 years and a past president of the Chamber of Commerce.  He served two terms on the City Council and was Parade Marshall of the Turkey Day Parade.  He sponsored a bowling team for many years, being an active bowler himself.  Karl was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church.     Karl is survived by his wife, Irma, of Worthington; a son, Herbert (Stefanie) Schafer, of Worthington; a granddaughter, Kristin (Manuel) Navarro, of Edina, Minnesota, and two grandsons, Daniel and Matthew.  He was preceded in death by his parents.     Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 11, 2007, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Worthington, Minnesota, with the Rev. Robert Schulze officiating.  Casket bearers were Richard Duba, Robert Andersen, Craig Lais, Francis Meier, Robert Westphal, and Manuel Navarro.  Honorary bearer was Allen Thiner.  Burial, with military rites, will be held in the Worthington Cemetery.
