Obituary for June DeWitt

June DeWitt of Worthington was born in Jackson, MN on June 15, 1925 to Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Sathe and she passed away on February 2nd 2019 surrounded by her loving family.
June grew up in Jackson, MN and graduated from Jackson High School, where she played violin in the orchestra. Upon graduating, she enrolled at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN where she graduated with a major in music. While she was there, she also played violin in the St. Olaf orchestra all four years under F. Melius Christiansen and was active in other organizations. She also played the violin in the Iowa State University orchestra in Ames and in the Great Plains Symphony under Charles Kehrberg. Upon graduating college, June taught music at Milford Public Schools in Milford, IA, where she met her future husband, Ross DeWitt. She later taught in Aurelia, IA.
June and Ross were married in Our Savior Lutheran Church in Jackson, MN on May 29, 1949. They moved to Ames, IA where they lived while Ross finished his education at Iowa State University to become a veterinarian.
In 1954, June and Ross moved to Worthington, MN. June was a member of First Lutheran Church for 64 years, as well as being an active member in the community as den mother, scout leader, and church choir, amongst many other organizations. She taught weekday church school and sent church visitor cards for many years. June obtained her private pilot’s license and hiked the Grand Canyon twice with Ross. Together they worked in Yellowstone for three years. She also worked in real estate and worked for Welcome Wagon bringing gifts to new mothers and newcomers to Worthington.
June enjoyed spending time and making memories with her family and her many cats, as well as traveling the world with Ross and enjoying life’s many treasures. She stayed active throughout her years by faithfully attending exercise groups at the YMCA and later at the Meadows. She will always be remembered for her compassion, her love for cats, her determination, and feisty personality. She was a true example of God’s love and shared 69 ½ years of marriage with Ross.
June is survived by her husband Ross and beloved cat, Snuffy; her daughter Diane Duitsman and husband Dennis and children Jesse, Jay, and Leah (Quinn) of Round Lake, MN; her son Dr. Thomas DeWitt and wife Linda and children Jodi (Chris and Ella), Tara, and Travis (Danielle) of Alexandria, MN; her daughter Nancy and husband David and children Troy (Erica) and Haley (Alex and Mercy) of Sioux Falls, SD.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2019, at 10:30 a.m., at the First Lutheran Church in Worthington, MN, with Pastor Jeanette McCormick officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
