Obituary for Joseph Michael McCarvel

Brewster, MN

     Joseph Michael McCarvel, 84, was born on March 30, 1926, in St. Joseph, MO, the son of Augusta and Michael McCarvel. He married Marie Agnes Salentiny on September 1, 1948, in Dundee, MN.
     A lifelong farmer, he started farming when he was 16 and still in high school due to his father’s illness. He began farming with 4 legged horses and went on to farming with tractors and machinery that had many more mechanical horses. He farmed the farm his parents owned in Hersey Township just northeast of Brewster in Nobles County where they raised livestock and grains. He graduated from Brewster High School in 1944.
     After marriage, he and Marie moved down the road to start their family and farm. Joe was one of the first farmers in the area to have a self propelled combine, a corn sheller and hay baler and did custom work for neighbors. Joe’s farming operation transitioned from cattle, pigs, chickens, and sheep to primarily corn and soybeans.
     He was an avid reader of newspapers and magazines and attended many farm auctions throughout the area. He was also interested in politics. He dedicated his spare time to youth and 4-H having being honored by having the 4-H food stand named McCarvel Hall in his honor at the Nobles County Fair Grounds. Joe and his family also received the honor of Nobles County Farm Family of the Year in 1984.
     Joe was active and participated in the community and was a member of the following organizations for many years at one time or another for most of his adult life: Brewster School Board, Brewster Lumber Yard Board, Hersey Township Board, CenBank Board, Knights of Columbus, Nobles County DFL, Nobles County Farmers Union, Nobles County 4-H Federation Board, Nobles County Zoning Commission, Nobles County Historical Society, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Wilmont Mutual Insurance, and First National Bank of Brewster.
     Joe is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marie; five children, Mike (Bev) McCarvel, Brewster, John McCarvel, Brewster, Bonnie (Jim) Nagel, St. Louis, MO, Thomas McCarvel, Bloomington, MN, and Ronnie (Julie) McCarvel, Brewster; eight grandchildren, Paul & Angie McCarvel and their children, Alexis and Emily, Tea, SD, Dan & Hillary McCarvel and their children Alex and Mikayla, Shakopee, MN, Lisa & Ryan Hanson and their son Blake, Andover, MN, Taylor, Logan and Abby McCarvel, Brewster, MN, Sarah (Nagel) & husband Brian Guilfoyle, St. Charles, MO, and Courtney Nagel, St. Louis, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter, Judy Marie.
     Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 7, 2011, at 10:30 a.m., at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Brewster, MN, with Father Russell Scepaniak and Father Andrew Olsem officiating. Casket bearers will be Dan McCarvel, Paul McCarvel, Tom Martinson, Troy Thompson, Galen Gunther, and William VonHoltum. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Brewster.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 6, 2011, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a prayer service at 3:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington, MN and also on Monday, February 7, 2011, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Brewster.

Memorials are preferred to Good Samaritan Home in Windom, MN.
