Obituary for John Story Taylor

Worthington, Minnesota

John Story Taylor, 101, was born on April 27, 1908, to Wesley M. and Flora (Havens) Taylor near Parkston, SD, on the farm his grandfather homesteaded. He attended country school near his home. When he was 14, he moved with his family to a farm near Milltown, SD. There he became part of his father’s farming operation. On June 6, 1934, he and Ruth Welch were married. They continued farming at Milltown until 1943, when they moved back to Parkston and farmed near the Taylor homestead. In 1954, they moved to Brewster, MN, and farmed there until they retired in 1970. In March 1996, John and Ruth moved to Homestead Cooperative in Worthington. On November 17, 2008, John moved to Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Fulda, MN, where he died on Monday, February 15, 2010.
John had many interests. While farming, he had registered Brown Swiss cattle and kept impecable records about his cattle. He and Ruth were avid square dancers for many years. He enjoyed helping others and even in his 90’s delivered meals Ruth prepared for others who needed a helping hand. John enjoyed time with his family and attended as many of his grandchildren’s activities as he could. He did the same for his great grandchildren as long as he could. John loved music and in his younger days played drums in the Milltown orchestra. He also loved pets, especially dogs. John was an active member at First Presbyterian Church in Brewster for many years. He attended First Covenant Church in Worthington during his later years. He had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed meeting new people and visiting.
John is survived by his wife of 75 years, Ruth; his daughter, Shirley (Dale) Martin of Worthington, MN; grandchildren, Tom (Debra) Martin of Reading, MN, Sarah (Jeff) Tupper of Woodbury, MN, Ted (Sarah) Martin of Brewster, MN, and Cindy Hommer of Fulda, MN; eight great grandchildren; many nephews and nieces, and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Leo, Dewey, and Dave, and two sisters, Bernice Hill and Mabel Rardin.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2010, at 11:00 a.m., at the First Covenant Church in Worthington, MN, with Pastor John Stewart and Pastor Kris Stewart officiating. Casket bearers will be Tom and Debra Martin, Sarah and Jeff Tupper, Ted and Sarah Martin, and Cindy Hommer. Burial will be in the Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Friday, February 19, 2010, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington.
