Obituary for John Stanley Spieker Jr.

John Stanley Spieker Jr., age 86, was born on January 4, 1935, in Rushmore, MN, the son of John Harm and Sena (Kruse) Spieker. He was baptized on April 7, 1935, at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Rushmore, MN. John attended country school in Slayton and Reading, along with Worthington School. He joined the United States Navy on November 30, 1954 and was stationed in Long Beach, CA. John went to Japan, Korea, Australia, and the Philippines. He received his honorable discharge on November 26, 1958. John married Elaine Velma Berkness on January 17, 1959, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Worthington. Following their marriage, they lived in Worthington, rural Brewster, Mankato, and then resided at The Meadows in Worthington for the past four years. John drove taxi in Worthington and had worked for Erbis Lumber Yard and Soderholm Manufacturing. He was an extremely talented carpenter and woodworking craftsman. John had built their house and pole shed. He enjoyed making bird houses and bird feeders and was an avid bird watcher. John loved kids and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great granddaughters. He was a dedicated donor for American Red Cross, donating over 150 times. John was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Worthington for 40+ years and then of Messiah Lutheran Church in Mankato, MN for 14 years. John passed away on Thursday, August 19, 2021, at the Sunset Hospice Cottage in Worthington, MN.
John is survived by his wife, Elaine of Worthington, MN; daughter, Sheryl (Daniel) Walters of Granite Falls, MN; son, Kevin (Lisa) Spieker of Worthington, MN; four grandchildren, Carissa (Jaden) Cuypers, Andrew (Lisa) Walters, Emily Spieker, and Sarah Spieker; three great grandchildren, Jora and Vaida Cuypers and Lainey Walters, and sisters, Sena (Harlan) Berkness and Viola (Duane) Weerts. He was preceded in death by his son, Todd Spieker; his parents; sisters, Patsy Galema, Frances Moret, and Sylvia Baddgor, and brothers, George Spieker, Raymond Spieker, and Wilbert Spieker.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 27, 2021, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m., at the American Lutheran Church in Worthington, MN, with Pastor Sarah Tadé officiating. Burial, with military rites, will be in the Worthington Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
