Obituary for John Koster Jr.

John Koster, Jr. age 86, formerly of Round Lake died Thursday, October 1, 2015. He was born August 1, 1929 to parents John and Alvina (Carstens) Koster in Worthington MN. He attended Country School #5 for 8 years. Then he attended Round Lake High School, graduating in 1947 as valedictorian of his class. He graduated from Worthington Junior College where he lettered in baseball, and briefly attended the University of MN where he studied Agricultural Engineering. He farmed with his father until he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he spent two years in Texas and Arkansas. After his discharge he started farming on his own. He and Bernice Larsen were married June 26, 1954. They had three daughters. They continued to live on their farm for 60 years until moving to Golden Horizons in April of 2014. John liked living on the farm so he could see the wildlife when he was outside working the land. He also enjoyed watching or listening to the Minnesota Twins, Vikings and Gophers games. He was a life-long learner and enjoyed reading.

      He did assessor work for several townships and towns in Nobles and Jackson Counties for 43 years. He was a member of Round Lake American Legion Post #461 for 62 years, serving as their adjutant and membership director for 25 years. He was the treasurer of the Jackson County Historical Society for 22 years. He was a third generation member of Grace Lutheran Church, rural Worthington, which he attended all of his life. He was very active in his church and served on the church council many years, acting as treasurer for 9 years.

      Those grateful for sharing his life include his wife, Bernice, children – Mari and Bill Stirler of Altoona IA, Shirley and Dan King of Round Lake, and Allison Koster of Worthington, Grandchildren Darren and Addie King of Brewster MN, Justin and Jennifer King of Richland Michigan, Karlyn and Dan Pierson of Rochester MN, Hillory and Aaron Jaco of Altoona IA. John is also survived by two great-grandchildren Trevor John King and Sophie King of Brewster. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Donald.

      Memorial service will be at 11:00 a. m. on Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at the Grace Lutheran Church, rural Worthington. Burial of cremains will be in the church cemetery.

     Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington.

      In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church or Jackson County Historical Society.
