Obituary for John "Jack" E. Fenstermacher, Jr.

John E., “Jack,” Fenstermacher, Jr. was born on March 21, 1931 in Spring Valley, MN. He was the first son of John E. Fenstermacher, Sr. and Inez (Sittler) Fenstermacher. The Fenstermacher family moved to Worthington in September of 1941. Jack went to Worthington schools and graduated from high school in 1949. He was the valedictorian of his class, played the baritone horn in the band, and was on the football, basketball, and baseball teams. After graduation, Jack earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa State University and a Master of Science degree from Pennsylvania State University, both in ceramic engineering. He was drafted into the Army in 1953 and served in a variety of army posts including Fort Meade in Maryland, Fort Riley in Kansas, and Fort Irwin in the Mojave Desert of California. After being transferred to Fort Richardson in Alaska, Jack became a member of the 71st Infantry Division Band as a baritone player. Jack was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and was honorably discharged from the Army in October of 1955. Thereafter, he worked for Hazel Atlas in Pennsylvania, Ford Motor Company in Michigan, and Amphenol-Borg in Illinois. He moved back to St. Louis Park, MN in 1971 and became a project engineer for Fluidyne Engineering. In this job, Jack traveled extensively throughout the US and Europe. Jack retired from Fluidyne in 1991 and subsequently settled in Excelsior, MN. He moved to Ocean View, NJ in 2014 and died there on October 6, 2017.
Jack is survived by his brother, Joseph (Joe) of Seaville, NJ, Joe’s wife, Mary, and their children, Paul (Lisa), David (Julie), and James (Niven) Fenstermacher and Sara (Roger) Soens. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 230 Clary Street, Worthington on Friday, December 15, 2017, at 1:30 PM, with Pastor Galen Smith officiating. There will be a reception for family and friends after the service. A gathering of Jack’s classmates will be held at the Norwood Inn later in the afternoon. A private committal ceremony will be in the Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
