Obituary for John Groendyke

John Groendyke, age 99, of Worthington, MN passed away on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD.
John was born in Ocheyedan, IA on September 1, 1918 to Cornelius and Elizabeth (Dykstra) Groendyke.
On June 19, 1940, John married Beatrice Dykema at the home of her parents by Bigelow. Three daughters were born to this union. John was drafted into the United States Army on June 19, 1945 but was able to return home soon after as the war ended. The couple moved to Worthington where John worked as a farmhand and a mechanic at Hudson Motors. In 1951 the family moved to their farm by Bigelow where they lived for 54 years. John was a hard worker, a proud farmer who put family first but was always willing to help out his friends and neighbors. He owned a corn sheller and provided corn shelling services for anyone in the area. After retiring from farming he drove truck for the Bigelow Farmers Elevator. In 2005 John and Beatrice moved from the farm into Worthington.
John was a member of the American Reformed Church, Worthington, where in his earlier years he held the offices of elder and deacon and sang in the church choir. John served on the Bigelow School Board, Ransom Township Board and served as treasurer for the Ransom Cemetery Board. He was a member of the Bigelow American Legion and was a regular at the Senior Citizens Center in Worthington playing cards and shooting pool. John will be remembered for his sense of humor and quick wit. He always enjoyed a good joke.
He is survived by his wife, Beatrice, of Worthington and his children: Joan (Larry) Johnson of Rockford, MN; Marilyn (Steve) Commaford of Coon Rapids, MN; Karen (Ron) Obermoller of Brewster, MN; six grandchildren, Jeff (Ginny) Commaford of Ramsey, MN; Joel Commaford of Ramsey, MN, Laura (Eric) Trontvet of Buffalo, MN; Ryan Johnson of Anoka, MN; Melissa Obermoller of Minnetonka, MN; and Jon Obermoller of Hopkins, MN; six great grandchildren, Emily, Meghan, Jackson, and Mason Trontvet; Kyle and Lauren Commaford; one sister Lucille Groendyke of Rock Rapids, IA; sister-in-law Kate Groendyke of Sanborn, IA; sister-in-law Grace Dykema of Hartford, SD; and many nieces and nephews.
