Joan Elvera Gustafson was born on June 3, 1922 in Worthington, MN to Diedrick and Mabel Dirks. She passed away on her 96th birthday surrounded by her loving family on June 3, 2018 at Crossroads Care Center in Worthington, MN.
She married Robert Arthur Gustafson on December 22, 1942. They raised their family and spent most of their lives in Worthington, MN. Joan worked as a retail sales clerk at various stores throughout her career. She enjoyed spending time with family, traveling, reading, crocheting and watching scary movies.
Joan is survived by her three children, Sandra Knigge, Sioux Falls, SD; Douglas Gustafson, Peoria, AZ; Patricia (Larry) Koehne, Lismore, MN; six grandchildren, Dawn (Sergio) Ruge, Springfield, MO; Ann (Greg) Stofferan, Winfield, KS; Michele (Brad) Abbink, Baltic, SD; Matthew Dass, Luverne, MN; Melanie (Russ) Penning, Wilmont, MN; Jamie (Dereck) Straatmeyer, Belle Fourche, SD; fifteen great-grandchildren, Devin (Alex Lunstra) Knigge, Taylor Knigge, Kai Ruge, Shane (Tanya) Stofferan, Spencer Stofferan, Cameran Stofferan, Caitlin Abbink, Brian Terhark, Zachary Terhark, Jena Abbink, Madison (fiancé Tim Bos) Dass, Jayden Dass, Rhett Penning, Riese Penning, Regan Penning; two great-great grandchildren, Kennedy Stofferan and Kambree Bos; two brothers, Harold (Dorothy) Dirks; Dick (Solveig) Dirks and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Diedrick and Mabel Dirks; husband Robert Gustafson; brother Robert (Elizabeth) Dirks; sister Rosella (Fred) Lenz; infant sister, Barbara June Dirks.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 6, 2018, at 11:00 a.m., at the Benson Funeral Home Chapel in Worthington, MN, with Doug Roth officiating. Burial will be in the Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the Benson Funeral Home.
