Obituary for Jay Peter Klein

Jay P. Klein, age 71, of Worthington, MN, was born May 9, 1946, in Adrian, MN, to James and Rose (Cox) Klein. He and his seven siblings grew up on the family farm outside Adrian. He attended St. Adrian High School, where he was an accomplished baseball and basketball player, scoring over 1,000 points during his high school basketball career. Jay attended Mankato State University, where he graduated with a BS in psychology and sociology. Mankato was where he met Anita Iverson, whom he would go on to marry on August 26, 1967. After their marriage, Jay’s time in the Air Force would take them from Biloxi, MS, to Denver, CO. Upon his release from the Air Force in 1972, they moved to Rochester, MN, where Jay taught social studies and coached basketball at St. Francis of Assisi Elementary School.

Jay and his family moved to Worthington, MN, in January of 1975 so he could take a position as a juvenile probation agent. In 1979 Jay became the director of Community Corrections for Rock and Nobles Counties, continuing in this position until his retirement in 2002. He was especially proud of his work writing grants for the counties to get funds for progressive programs. Jay was a hard worker who valued doing things right. His extensive handyman talents were always happily shared and in great demand when he was visiting his daughters.

Jay remained active in sports throughout his years in Worthington. He enjoyed playing basketball at the YMCA and softball with the “cops.” A long-time member of the Worthington Country Club, he rarely missed his Thursday golf league. Jay was very sociable, an avid reader, and a sports fan. He was always up for lively conversation. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling to visit friends and family, relishing the opportunity to catch up on their lives. Jay passed away on Wednesday, May 2, 2018, at Sanford Hospice in Luverne, MN.

Jay is survived by his two daughters and their families: Jennifer & Dirk DeWester of Columbia Heights, MN, and their children, Jordan & Nicklas; and Stephanie & Tim Hodge of Magnolia, MN, and their son, Tyler. He is also survived by brothers and sisters, Patricia Ross (MN), Eugene Klein (AZ), Jack Klein (WI), Kathy Lais (MO), and Mike Klein (MN), as well as many brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anita Klein; his parents, James and Rose Klein; his brother Robert Klein; and his sister Therese Koudelka.

Visitation will be held on Monday, May 7, 2018, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington, MN. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 8, 2018, at 11:00 a.m., at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Worthington, MN, with Pastor Jeanette McCormick officiating. Lunch will be served immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donations to the Luverne Hospice Cottage or the Nobles County Library.
