Obituary for James William Hochstein

James William Hochstein passed away on July 13, 2020, at age 76. Born February 25, 1944, in Worthington, Minnesota, to Elnora and Clarence Hochstein, Jim grew up on the family farm by Dundee, Minnesota. Jim was confirmed in First Lutheran Church of Dundee. After his 1962 graduation from Fulda High School, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on January 14, 1963, and served on active duty for four years, with an additional two years on reserve duty. His active duty service included a tour at Hickam Air Force Base on Oahu, Hawaii. On June 1, 1963, before leaving for Hawaii, James Hochstein and LaDonna Comnick of Dovray, MN, were married. Son Scott was born in Hawaii, and daughter Teresa was born in Slayton when they returned to the mainland.
Over the years, Jim lived and worked in several cities in Minnesota, including Mankato, Minneapolis, and St. Cloud. While in Mankato, Jim was a key punch operator for Mankato State College. He went on to work in the insurance business for several years, and then he worked many years in the auto sales business. Outdoors, Jim enjoyed golf, boating, water fowl hunting, and snowmobiling.
When he retired, Jim moved to Westbrook, Minnesota, where he enjoyed grilling out, remodeling his house, and visiting with friends, neighbors, and family. Jim loved to drive, and he loved to tell stories and to talk about cars. Jim was especially fond of Lincoln cars and owned several over the years. Jim greatly appreciated visits with Reverend Karla Kirkeby and friends Chad Wahl and Allen (Shorty) Wahl, neighbor Wayne Mischke, and long-time friends Ron and Julie Kaplan.
James Hochstein was much loved as a father, grandpa, and brother. Jim is survived by his son Scott Sorenson (Brenda Smith of Luverne, MN and her children Jade, Jacey, and Makenzie); his daughter Teresa Nowak (Brian) of Gilbert, Arizona; and his grandsons Tristan Sorenson and Tucker Sorenson, and Jake Nowak and Max Nowak. Jim is also survived by his former wife, LaDonna Berger of Worthington, and his brothers and sister: Jerry Hochstein (Janet) of Windom, MN; Gloria Hochstein of Eau Claire, WI; and Allen Hochstein of South Haven, MN (former wife Pat Hochstein of Burnsville, MN.)
