Obituary for James Lowell Leckband

Worthington, MN

James Lowell Leckband, 80, was born on January 6, 1930 to Louis and Emma (Riebesehl) Leckband in Ocheyedan, IA. He was baptized on January 26, 1930 and confirmed on April 13, 1944. Jim attended Lone Star Country School through the 4th grade, Zion Lutheran Parochial School 5th through 8th grade and graduated from Ocheyedan, Iowa Public School in 1948. He was a staff sergeant in the Army Reserve for six years. Jim was a farmer and for years raised beef cattle and hogs. He was a “do everything” person – whether machinery needed repairs, small plumbing repair or small electrical repair. Jim enjoyed fishing, hunting, wood working and family trips.
Jim was a faithful member of the Lutheran church. He was a Sunday school teacher for years, the Sunday school superintendent, treasurer of Bethel Lutheran Church, an elder of the church and member of the choir. His strong faith in his Lord was always evident in the way he lived his life.
His first love always was his family – his wife, his children and his 7 grandchildren.
Jim married Maureen Rehborg on January 10, 1954 at Zion Lutheran Church in Ocheyedan, IA. They lived in Ocheyedan until March 1955 when they moved to the farm in Minnesota where they continued to live. Two children were born to this union, Gregory James and Germaine Joy. They have seven grandchildren: Lacey, Laura, Kayla, Kole and Jon Leckband and Kylee and Trenton Persing. Jim died on Sunday, December 12, 2010 at the Sanford Medical Center in Worthington, MN.
Jim is survived by the love of his life and wife of 56 years, Maureen Leckband; his son, Gregory (Roxann) of Ocheyedan, IA; his daughter, Germaine (Ken) Persing of Mound, MN, and six grandchildren, Lacey, Laura, Kayla and Jon Leckband and Kylee and Trenton Persing.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Emma, his grandson, Kole Leckband, his brothers-in-law, Reinerd Wulkow and Marcus Rueter and sisters-in-law, Eleanor Erler and Marlys Woolridge.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 18, 2010 at 10:30 a.m., at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Worthington, MN, with Pastor Tom Braun officiating. Burial will be in the Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Blessed be his memory.

Visitation will be held on Friday, December 17, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington.
