Obituary for Irvin Michael Schons

Worthington, Minnesota      Irvin Michael Schons, 88, was born on March 5, 1919, on a farm north of Tracy, Minnesota, in Amiret Township.     He was the son of John and Elizabeth Wester Schons.  Irvin married Mary Lou Johnson on November 21, 1953, in Marshall, Minnesota.     Irvin grew up on the family farm.  He attended rural School District 36.  After the death of his father in 1941, he farmed the family farm with his mother.  He continued to farm there after his marriage until 1962, when they moved to a farm near Rushmore, Minnesota.  Irvin retired from farming in 1988 and they moved to Worthington, Minnesota, in 2001.     Irvin was baptized at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Tracy and was a member there until moving to the Rushmore area.  He then became a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Worthington.  Irvin was a DeKalb seed corn dealer for 25 years.  He was a member of the Rushmore Senior Citizens, Birthday Club, Knights of Columbus, Golden Kiwanis, and several card clubs.     Irvin loved bowling, fishing, and playing pool with his wife after moving to the Meadows.  He also loved gardening and enjoyed roses.  His children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were the light of his life.     Irvin died on Tuesday, April 10, 2007, at the South Shore Care Center in Worthington, Minnesota.     Irvin is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Lou, of Worthington; two sons, Wayne Schons, of Sheldon, Iowa, and Irvin Jr. (Mickey) Schons, of Rushmore, Minnesota; three daughters, Kathryn North, of Ceres, California, Peggy Schons Kappes, of Alvin, Texas, and Susan (Lyle) Kawlewski, of Ottertail, Minnesota; three sisters, Edith (Bob) Foley, of New Ulm, Minnesota, Anna Mae Breczinski, of Tracy, Minnesota, and Virginia (Jim) Foley, of Slayton, Minnesota; 15 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren (with 3 more to arrive); sisters-in-law, Beatrice and Alice Schons, Pat and June Johnson, and Margaret Sittig, and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and three sisters.      Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 14, 2007, at 12:00 p.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Worthington, Minnesota, with Father Charles Quinn officiating.  Irvin’s grandsons, Casey, Mikey, Chad, Matt, Josh, Ben, Mark, and Brandon served as casket bearers.  Honorary bearers were Irvin’s granddaughters and nephews.  Burial was in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.
