Obituary for Irma LaVerne Henderson

Irma LaVerne Henderson, age 100, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, March 17, 2021, at Ecumen Meadows in Worthington.
Irma was born October 3, 1920, in Winner, South Dakota, to Ray and Fronia (Westcott) Burket. She lived much of her early childhood in Winner before moving to Ocheyedan, Iowa, and later to Reading, Minnesota. She graduated from Worthington High School in 1938 and went on to graduate from Mankato Teachers College. She taught for one year. During World War II Irma moved to Wichita, Kansas, where she worked as an inspector at Beechcraft, a manufacturer of military aircraft.
Irma married Robert Harry Henderson on March 24, 1944, in Wichita. While Bob was in the military, they lived in Colorado and Georgia before returning to Minnesota. Their union was blessed with a son and a daughter, Jim and Deanna.
Irma worked at Lakeview School (Crippled Children’s School) until her retirement in 1982. After retiring from the school district, she enjoyed working at Ocheda Orchard in the Fall for several years. She was a long time member of the Worthington Christian Church and taught Sunday School and youth groups for many years.
Irma’s greatest joy was her family. Nothing brought a smile to her face more quickly than a phone call or visit from family - especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Through the years she enjoyed traveling and she and Bob traveled to all 48 states. She was an excellent seamstress and also enjoyed counted cross-stitch, embroidery, Christian music, politics, the Twins, and was an avid reader.
Irma is survived by her son, Jim Henderson, of Worthington and daughter, Deanna (Dallas) Hallstrom of Mankato; six grandchildren: Todd (Laura) Henderson, Megan and Ethan; Ryan (Dawn) Hallstrom, Ashley and Jake; Chad (Sara) Henderson, Hannah and Tristan, Tanner (Marrisa), Lincoln and Kinsley; Heidi (Tim) Bents and Kaylee, Deven (Kallie), Tessa and Taylor; Rachel (Jason) Worwa, Brecken and Kendall; Krista (Shawn) Van Heuvelen, Tanner and Morgan; and nieces and nephews. Irma was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob; daughter-in-law, Sharon Henderson; sisters, Esther Burket, Ruthella Burket and Evelyn Stude; brothers, Walter, Clarence, and Leonard; and in-laws, Dorothy Burket, Katie Burket, and Ernie Stude.
A private family service will be held at Benson Funeral Home on Friday, April 2, 2021, with Pastor Doug White officiating. A private family burial will follow in the Worthington Cemetery with Pastor Jim Allard officiating.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of the Meadows for their love, compassion and care shown to Irma. Thanks also to the staff of Avera Hospice for their excellent care.
Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
