Obituary for Irma Justine Schafer

Worthington, MN

Irma Justine Schafer, 98, of Worthington, died on Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at the Sanford Worthington Medical Center in Worthington, MN.
Irma was born in Primghar, IA on February 26, 1915, the daughter of Carl and Anna Steuck.
Irma graduated from Worthington High School and moved to Appleton, WI, where she worked at JC Penney as an accountant.
She was united in marriage to Karl Schafer on December 8, 1946, in Worthington.  They were business partners for all of the 60 years of marriage until Karl’s death in 2007.
They had many businesses in Worthington beginning with Schafer’s Meat Market in 1946, which was in the present Schafer’s Health Food Store located on 10th Street.  In 1963, they built Karleys Drive-In on South Shore.  In 1975, they opened Schafer’s Health Food Store on the adjoining property.  During this time they became business partners with Peter Skliris to build the Gobbler Restaurant and Oxford Motel.  Eight years later they moved the Health Food Store back to the original location at 207 10th St., where it is today.  Irma continued managing the store with the help of family until she sold it to Amanda Walljasper-Tate in July of 2008.  Irma retired at the age of 93.
Irma was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Elks Lodge, VFW, Legion, and Country Club.  She was a parade marshal with Karl for the Turkey Day Parade.
Irma loved to golf and bowl and was able to still pursue the sports at the age of 90.  Irma was a wonderful cook.  She never missed baking a cake for Herb’s birthday.  Up until a few years ago she had a full garden and enjoyed canning and freezing her garden.
Irma is survived by a son, Herbert (Stefanie) Schafer of Worthington, MN; granddaughter, Kristin Navarro of Owatonna, MN; two grandsons, Dr. Daniel (Kelsey) Schafer of Owatonna, MN and Matthew (fiancée Nichole) Schafer of Sioux Falls, SD, and one great granddaughter, Gabriella Navarro.  Irma was preceded in death by her husband Karl, her parents and sister, Clara Karcher.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2013, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Worthington, MN, with Pastor Joe Behnke officiating.  Burial will be in the Worthington Cemetery.
