Obituary for Helen Mae Stenzel

Minneapolis, MN

Helen (Fleace) Stenzel 79, of Okabena and Heron Lake, Minnesota and later of Minneapolis, Minnesota passed away on March 27, 2013 surrounded by her loving children and grandchildren.
She was born at home, on the farm, in Alba Township of Jackson County, Minnesota on May 29, 1933; the daughter of Victor and Minnie (Hussong) Fleace, the fourth of 13 children.  Helen was mother to seven children; Charlotte Post, Cheryl “Boots” Buckeye, Kerwin “Craig” (Corinne) Stenzel, Kevin (Geraldine) Stenzel, Krayton “Scott” (LeeAnn) Stenzel, Carol Michael and Carla Stenzel, 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.   She was the loving companion to John Joosten.
Helen earned her Associates Degree in 1980, her Bachelors of Science in Business in 1983, and her Masters of Arts in Public Affairs from the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute in 1990; all from the University of Minnesota.
She spent her early life caring for her children and grandchildren, while returning to school at the age of 45, where she began to fulfill her boundless curiosity for knowledge and learning.  She wrote her graduate thesis on the Federal Agricultural Commodity Policy and Rural America; receiving recognition by Dean Ed Schuh of the University of Minnesota and Senator Dave Durenberger.  She was an avid reader, political news follower and devoted Catholic.
Although a 40+ year resident of Minneapolis, she still considered herself a “farm girl”.
A private service celebrating Helen’s life and accomplishments will be held Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at 11:00 a.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington.
