Obituary for Helen Jean Schaap

Helen Jean Schaap was born on November 18, 1924, to George and Jennie (Bonnema) Snieder in Ireton. She was raised on the family farm near Ireton, Iowa. Helen received her education through Ireton Christian Grade School and Ireton Public High School. She attended Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, for one year in order to receive her teaching certificate.

On June 17, 1945, Helen was united in marriage to John F. Schaap in Alexandria, Louisiana, prior to his military deployment to Japan. Following John’s discharge from service, the young family lived in Sioux Center, Iowa, before making their home in Worthington, Minnesota, in 1951. At this time John began Schaap Plumbing and Heating and then later purchased Schaap Sanitation from his father, Fred Schaap. Meanwhile, Helen was a homemaker for the family while raising their two children. Later in life, she and John were blessed to be able to help several families and children through difficult times in their lives by opening up their hearts and home.

Helen’s heart for helping continued as she was a founding board member of the Worthington Helping Hand Pregnancy Center and founding member of the World Bible League Worthington Chapter. She was an active member of the Worthington Christian Reformed Church where she served on the Evangelism Committee, taught the Good News Club children’s ministry, and taught E.S.L. classes. Helen was a devoted woman of prayer and participated in a women’s non-denominational prayer group. She studied God’s Word and prayed her life be reflective of Jesus’ message of loving, forgiving, and caring for others.

Following John’s retirement, he and Helen enjoyed wintering in Sun City, Arizona. On September 24, 2014, John went home to be with his Lord Jesus Christ. In November 2014, Helen moved to Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City, Iowa. On Monday, April 2, 2018, while at the Unity Point St. Luke’s Hospital in Sioux City, Helen went home to be with her Lord Jesus Christ at the age of 93 years, four months and 14 days.

Helen is lovingly remembered by her two children, Ronald (Diane) Schaap of Rochester, Minnesota, and Verlyn (Carol) Schaap of Sioux City; seven grandchildren, Stephanie (Mike) Sawyer, Emily (Jim) Hilleman, Kathleen (Travis) Yager, Matthew (Kathryn) Schaap, Charissa (Joshua) Camping, Susan (Andrew) Bisson, Mark (Megan) Schaap; 19 great-grandchildren, with another on the way; her “adopted” family, Juana and Randy Traylor, and their four sons; a sister, Vivian Ebbers of Oostburg, Wisconsin; sister-in-law, Margaret Snieder of Grandville, Michigan; and other family. She was preceded in death by her husband, John; siblings, Bernard Snieder and Evelyn (George) Drost; and a brother-in-law, Lloyd Ebbers.

Visitation will be held on Friday, April 6, 2018, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with a time of sharing at 7:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington, MN. Burial will be held prior to the service on Saturday, April 7, 2018, at 9:30 a.m., at the Worthington Cemetery. A Celebration of Life service will follow on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Worthington Christian Reformed Church in Worthington, MN.

Memorials may be directed to the Worthington Christian School Scholarship Fund or the Worthington Christian Reformed Church International Ministries.
