Obituary for Hazel Esther Griffith

Worthington, MN

Hazel Esther Griffith was born on July 2, 1949 in Dickens, IA to Arthur and Lillie Taylor. She graduated from Cornell in 1947. Her family moved from Iowa to Reading, MN. She met and married James Emmons Griffith on January 26, 1949. James died in August 1967 when he drowned while in Alaska on a much anticipated hunting trip with his older brother, Bob.

Hazel moved around a lot in her life. She was a clerk at Ben Franklin’s; waitress at the Train Depot, Ehlers and Michaels; assistant manager and bookkeeper at Bob Johnson’s Paint Store, credit manager at Sherwin Williams Paint-all in Worthington, MN. She was the assistant manager at Badger Paint Co. of Fridley and Richfield, MN. She then moved to Adrian, where she was City Clerk. She also bought the Wagon Wheel Bar and Grill. Onto the Iron Range where she was City Clerk in Gilbert, MN. She was too far from family, so she moved to Spicer, MN and was a caretaker for three elderly gentlemen. Moved a few miles to Willmar and was caretaker for a couple of mentally challenged males. At this time she also sold Mary Kay. She ran an assistant living home in Prior Lake. They closed their doors, she moved to New Prague where she again ran an assistant living home. Finally, her kids said that she had worked long and hard enough and it was time to retire. So, back to Worthington she came. She lived at Okabena Towers and then lived with her daughter for a few years. She loved playing cards. Many get-togethers ended with the traditional card game of 500 with Jennifer, Janyce, and Tim. She loved attending church and was involved with other church activities. Hazel enjoyed bowling, square dancing, archery, softball and playing cards (Bridge and 500). She also was a publisher for a while putting together “Hazen Jargon”. This was something she put together for her beloved sisters and brothers. I think they enjoyed reading it as much as she enjoyed putting it together.

Hazel went to be with her Heavenly Father and loved ones that passed on before her, on Monday, May 5, 2014, at Crossroads Care Center. She is survived by her children: Janyce (Aaron) Krohn of Burnsville, MN; Jennifer Griffith of Worthington; Tim (Catrinia) Griffith of Eden Prairie; grandchildren: James Krohn of Burnsville, MN; Rachel Shirkey of San Jose, CA; Rebecca Shirkey of Eagan, MN; Jeremy Altman of Beaverton, OR; Brandon Jones; Melissa (Brent) Mentele of Emery, SD; Adam Griffith of Victoria; great grandchildren: Ethan Spiczka of Eagan, MN; Lillian, Madison, and Lukus Mentele of Emery, SD. She is also survived by her brothers: Wallace (Phyllis) Taylor of Decorah, IA; Arthur (Susan) Taylor of Brook Park, MN; sisters: Alpharetta Palaschak of Adrian, MN; Colleen Leonard of Lancaster, OH; Jacque (Bruce) Vatne of Mendota Heights, MN; in-laws: Elinor Griffith, Randy (Deb) Griffith, and Rosie (John) Nelson of Worthington, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, parents-in-law, sisters: Wanda and Florence, brothers: Charles and Kevin, brothers-in-law: William, Robert, Francis, Jack, and sisters-in-law: Helen and Ila.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, May 16, 2014, at 11:00 a.m., at the Worthington Christian Church in Worthington, MN, with Pastor Doug White officiating.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 15, 2014, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington, MN.
