Obituary for Gordon S. Thompson

Worthington, Minnesota      Gordon S. Thompson, 102, of Worthington, died on Friday, February 8, 2008, at the Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Fulda, Minnesota.     Gordon was born on August 9, 1905, in Worthington, to Thomas H. and Ingeborg Dorheim Thompson.  He graduated from Worthington High School in 1927 and attended Huron College in Huron, South Dakota, and then the University of Minnesota.     Gordon married Sylvia Nelson on July 12, 1936, in Alden, Minnesota.     He returned to Worthington and was the city clerk and manager of utilities for 37 years.  He was a past president of the League of Minnesota Cities.     Gordon was an active member of the First Lutheran Church in Worthington, serving as an usher and on the church board.  He was also a member of the Worthington Country Club, enjoying many rounds of golf with friends and playing into his nineties.     Gordon is survived by daughter, Jane Hixon, of Burnsville, Minnesota; granddaughter, Anne Hixon, of Burnsville; grandson, John Hixon, of St. Paul, Minnesota; brother-in-law, Roger Nelson, of Albert Lea, Minnesota, and Mrs. Helen Nelson, of Albert Lea, and niece and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia, his parents, a sister, A. Marie Swanson, and a brother, Robert Thompson.     Memorial services will be held on Saturday, February 23, 2008, at 11:30 a.m., at the First Lutheran Church in Worthington, Minnesota, with the Rev. Richard Ricker officiating.  Private family burial will be held prior to the service in the Worthington Cemetery.  Family prefers memorials directed to First Lutheran Church, Worthington, MN.Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
