Obituary for George Thomas Nasers

George Thomas Nasers, age 76, the son of Thomas and Ann (Fox) Nasers, was born on February 1, 1938 in Sibley, Iowa. He was baptized, received first communion, and was confirmed in the Catholic Church.

As a youth, George lived north of Worthington, where his parents farmed. He graduated from Worthington Senior High School in 1956 where he excelled at football, wrestling and track. He completed course work at Worthington Community College in 1956/57 before embarking on a rewarding, community focused, professional life.

George began a successful career in sales while working at Silverberg’s in downtown Worthington, MN, and opened George’s Shoe Box – just across 10th street - in 1970, where he led his team until 1985. During the second half of his career, he thoroughly enjoyed selling water filters for Bon Del and men’s clothing for Leuthold Clothiers, driving semi trucks for Worthington Grain & Feed, and selling life insurance and investments to clients of the Century Companies of America, the Cuna Mutual Group and Mass Mutual.

In addition, George contributed to Worthington’s vitality via participation in the following Worthington organizations: Chamber of Commerce, 4H, Jaycees, Knights of Columbus, Saddle Club, and the local chapter of the Minnesota Quarter Horse Association; as well as our state and nation’s protection and defense as a member of the Minnesota Army National Guard.

George was married to Susan Sowles on September 23, 1957. George was united in marriage to Leila Gilbert on July 3, 1993 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. Together, they established a beautiful home, which has served as the center of love filled family gatherings and activities for over twenty years.

When George was not busy providing exceptional service for generations of deeply appreciated customers, he enjoyed a wide variety of recreational pursuits, as both an active participant and very supportive spectator. He invested numerous enjoyable hours playing on and coaching for a wide variety of softball teams, and was tremendously successful while showing horses all over the upper Midwest.

George was equally interested in the development of others, and consistently and lovingly supported his children and grandchildren by attending as many of their athletic and fine arts performances as possible. At a greater distance from the action, he savored watching and listening to as many Vikings, Twins and Gopher football and basketball games as possible.

George was a deeply compassionate man and a doting husband, father, grandfather, and sibling. He was especially fond of, and moved by, the many beautiful cards he received for his birthday and Father’s Day. His unwavering concern for the care and well-being of others was reflected back at him in the predictable, though innumerable, genuine smiles, handshakes, hugs, and heartfelt affection he received from others wherever he went. His love for Perkins (in Worthington especially, but including locales far and wide) gave him cherished access to friends old and new, and provided the perfect opportunity to share his love and appreciation of others on a daily basis.

George passed away on Thursday, March 20, 2014 at the Sanford Worthington Medical Center.

Left to cherish and celebrate his memory are his wife, Leila, of Worthington, MN; Children: Joy (Monte) Thue of Eden Prairie, MN, Sherri (Tim) Baumgarn of Round Lake, MN, Todd (Rebecca) Nasers of Mankato, MN, Jan (Elwin) Aggen of Worthington, MN, Mary (Richard) Inglett of Portage, WI, Seth (Kathryn) Gilbert of Dubuque, IA, Shauna (Randy) Johnsen of Clermont, IA, Siblings: Shirley (Larry) Wagner of Heron Lake, MN, Kay (Buzz) Scheitel of Worthington, MN, 12 Grandchildren, 3 Great Grandchildren, and many relatives and friends.

George was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Vera Nasers, and two brothers, James Nasers and Paul Nasers.
