Obituary for Gayl Rose Walerius

Garland, Texas

Gayl Rose Schumann Walerius, 60, of Garland, Texas, moved Home on March 3, 2010.
Gayl was born in Worthington, Minnesota on September 9, 1949 the only child of Walter and Lynora Schumann. She attended Round Lake Public School until graduation in 1967. The challenges of starting school were lessened with her Mom as her first teacher.
In 1963, Walter was killed in a car accident when Gayl was 12. Through this Gayl learned that the grace of God is sufficient. She also learned resilience and a “never give up” attitude from her mother’s leadership.
Gayl acquired a home economics teaching degree as well as elementary ed and ESL. Gayl found teaching to be very rewarding and taught a total of 11 years. She chose to dedicate her life to raising a family and taking time away from teaching others while her own children were preschoolers. Gayl loved each area in which she taught.
On June 23,1973 Gayl married the love of her life, Chuck Walerius. They have four children, and are also blessed with 5 grandchildren.
However, Gayl’s greatest love was in service to others in God’s name. In Minnesota, her family started “God’s Hand Ministries” where their goal was to be Jesus’ hands and feet in ministering to those in need. This work they continued upon moving to Texas in 2006.
She loved to learn and was happiest when learning especially doing in depth Bible studies. She was blessed with creativity in many areas including sewing, crafts, and cooking for which she was well known. She enjoyed cooking for large groups as a service ministry even after suffering 4 strokes 1999-2001.
Gayl did not want her battle with cancer to cause a gloomy disposition so was constantly finding something humorous in a tough situation. She knew that God makes NO mistakes and faced her future with much hope.
Gayl is survived by her husband, Chuck, 4 children: Kristin of Round Lake, Minnesota; Brett (Jill) of Sioux Falls, SD; Joel of Round Lake, Minnesota; and Paul (Krista) of Marshall, Minnesota; and 5 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2010, at 9:00 a.m., at the First Baptist Church in Worthington, MN, with Dr. David Sundeen officiating. Burial will be in the Round Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
