Obituary for Gary Gene Olson

Worthington, MN

     Gary Gene Olson, 63, was born on July 30, 1948, in Windom, MN, the son of Bernard and Nola (Anders) Olson. He graduated from Okabena High School in 1966. Gary joined the United States Army on December 4, 1969, and went to Fort Monmouth, NJ, where he graduated with honors. He spent 13 months in Korea and received a promotion to Spec 5 and then transferred to the missile range in White Sands, NM, where he served until September of 1972. Gary joined the National Guards in Worthington in September of 1981. Gary married Beverley Carol Reed on June 7, 1991, in Worthington. He farmed the family farm for 5 years and worked for Campbell Soup Company for 15 years. He then worked for Finley Engineering in Slayton, MN, for 5 years, until retiring due to ill health from cancer. Gary enjoyed collecting coins, figurines, and hot wheels, going to flea markets and having rummage sales. He also spent many years on researching the Olson family tree and belonged to the genealogy study group at the Worthington library. Gary died on Tuesday, August 30, 2011, at the Veteran’s Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.
     Gary is survived by his wife, Beverley Olson of Worthington, MN; step-daughter, Kim (Larry) Hemlich of Howard, SD; step-grandchildren, Tavia, Zachary, and Gabrielle; brother-in-law, John Clark of Irving, TX; one brother, Roger (Sandy) Olson of Litchfield, MN; four sisters, Sally (William) Ladwig of Baxter, MN, Nancy (Myron) Lueck of Detroit Lakes, MN, Patty Olson of Douglas, AK, and Carol (David) Garmer of Brewster, MN; nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, and one brother, Duane Olson.
     Memorial services, with military rites, will be held on Saturday, September 3, 2011, at 10:30 a.m., at the Benson Funeral Home Chapel in Worthington, MN, with Rev. Robert Bartlett officiating. Honorary bearers will be John Luft, Jerry Wagner, Curtis Olson, John Bauman, Rodney Olson, and Edward Smith.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 2, 2011, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington.

In lieu of flowers, family prefers memorials.
