Obituary for Frederick "Fritz" Brandt

Worthington, MN

Frederick “Fritz” Duane Brandt, 72, of Worthington, was born on January 12, 1939 in Hartley, IA, the son of Alfred and Esther (Meier) Brandt. At age 8, he moved with his family to a farm northwest of Mountain Lake, MN. He graduated from Mountain Lake High School in 1957. Fritz worked for the Land O Lakes Co. in Mountain Lake right out of high school and enjoyed his job there of hauling milk. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in May of 1958 until June of 1961. He was a member of the Minnesota Centennial Platoon and served as a military police.
On October 1, 1960 Fritz was united in marriage to Patricia Ann Elness at the Windom Evangelical Lutheran Church in Windom, MN. He worked at Reserve Mining Co. in Silver Bay, MN and later for Scheppman Construction Co. of Okabena and 17 years for Armour and Co. in Worthington. He drove truck for Smith Trucking of Worthington as an owner/operator for 30 years. After retirement, he spent most of his time doing organic gardening and taking care of his apple orchard and truck shop along with his daily trips for coffee to Perkins. He loved “farming” and enjoyed visiting with many local farmers over a cup of coffee. His hobbies included snowmobiling, cycle riding and dancing.
In September of this past year, Fritz was diagnosed with lung cancer and fought the disease courageously. Fritz passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 13, 2011 at his home surrounded by his family.
Fritz is survived by his wife of 50 years, Patricia (Elness) Brandt of Worthington, MN; three daughters, Lori Welling of Sioux Falls, SD, Lisa Brandt of Worthington and Kristin Schmidt of Worthington; one son, Travis Brandt of Sioux Falls; one sister, Betty Nelson of Castle Rock, CO; one brother, Franklin Brandt of Worthington; five grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Esther Brandt and one infant son, Timothy.
Funeral services, with military honors, will be held on Thursday, February 17, 2011 at 11:00 a.m., at the American Lutheran Church in Worthington, MN, with Rev. Bruce Carlson officiating. Casket bearers will be Bill Hinrichs, Gary Lutterman, Gary Skarset, Joe Lorenz, Norman Williams and Duane Anderson. Honorary bearers will be Howard Sulhiem, Byron Bicknese, Randy Griffith, George Nasers, Gary Drent and Melvin Camery. Burial will be at a later date in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Windom, MN.
As one joy scatters a thousand gifts, so Fritz’s life touched many.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 16, 2011, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington and on Thursday, February 17, 2011, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at the American Lutheran Church in Worthington.
