Obituary for Florence Elizabeth Vance

Worthington, Minnesota      Florence Elizabeth Vance, 92, was born on August 7, 1914, in Hollywood, California, the daughter of Morris and Elizabeth “Libby” Williams.  She moved to Fargo, N.D., with her parents and her brother, Roland.  She attended the local primary schools, was graduated from Fargo High School, and completed her educations at Minnesota State University - Moorhead.     After graduation, Florence taught at schools in Arthur, N.D., Wadena and Montevideo, Minnesota, before moving to Worthington to teach vocal music.  She joined James L. Vance in England where he served in the U.S. Air Force, and they were married June 21, 1952, in Norwich.  They returned to Worthington where Jim resumed the family newspaper business and Florence continued to be involved in community activities and musical endeavors.  Her husband preceded her in death on May 6, 2002.     Florence directed church choirs and community chorus musicals.  She was involved in League of Women Voters and in P.E.O., a philanthropic educational organization.  She hosted innumerable dinners for politicians, International Press Institute members, artists and visiting musicians.  A number of community groups benefited from her philanthropic gifts.     Florence died on Saturday, January 6, 2007, at the South Shore Care Center in Worthington, Minnesota.  She is survived by nephews and nieces, great nephews and great nieces.     Memorial services will be held on Thursday, January 11, 2007, at 11:00 a.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Worthington, Minnesota, with the Rev. Gordon J. Orde officiating.  Private burial of her cremains will be held in the Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
