Obituary for Esther Muriel Hay

Worthington, MN

Esther Muriel Hay, 104, passed away on Sunday, May 1, 2016, at the South Shore Care Center in Worthington, MN. She was born on September 27, 1911, in Alpena, SD to John Henry and Anna Johnson Venables.
Esther grew up with six siblings on a farm near Alpena about 20 miles south of Huron. Her oldest brother, Ernest, had farm chores with their father. Each of the following three girls was assigned to care for one of the three younger boys. Esther graduated from the local high school in 1929. She attended Normal Training College in Aberdeen for one year where she received a teaching certificate which allowed her to teach in country school. She returned to the family and taught in a nearby country school for three years before leaving the position.
Not long after, she traveled to Worthington, MN to visit her sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Clarence Jones. Esther met and married John Russell Hay in 1936 in Worthington. Three children were born before the family moved to California during World War II where another child was born. After the war ended, John and Esther moved back to the Midwest to be closer to family. Esther and John were married for 63 years before John passed away in 1997. They resided at Homestead Cooperative in Worthington from 1996 to 2011.
Esther is survived by her four children, William (Evelyn) Hay of St. Paul, MN, Jerry (Elaine) Hay of Worthington, Joan Kuemper of Albuquerque, NM, and Leslie (Michael) Bernard of Burbank, CA. Esther was delighted with having eleven grandchildren, twenty-six great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, and many loving relatives throughout South Dakota, Minnesota, and beyond. She is also survived by “her baby brother”, Lawrence Venables of Tumwater, WA.
Esther was a warm and genial person with a loving smile, an infectious laugh, and a wonderful sense of humor. Her family and friends will miss her very much and treasure those memories.
In addition to her husband, John, Esther was preceded in death by her parents, John and Anna Venables; her siblings, Ernest Venables, Margaret Jones, Evelyn Arndt, Lloyd (Bud) Vanables, and John Venables, Jr.
Early morning on July 7, 2016, Esther was interred in a private burial service for the family in the Worthington Cemetery next to her husband, John.
The memorial service to honor Esther’s life will be held on Thursday, July 7, 2016, at 11:00 a.m., at the First United Methodist Church, 408 11th St., Worthington, MN, with Rev. Dr. Daren Flinck officiating. A reception will be held at the church immediately following the service for family and friends to reminisce and share thoughts and memories.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 6, 2016, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington.
