Obituary for Elizabeth Rost

Mayo Elizabeth Rost was born February 29, 1924 in O’Connee County, Georgia the daughter of Hulit and Mayo (Lytle) Cartey. After graduating high school, she went to work at the Navy Munition Plant in Macon, Georgia making shells for the Navy in World War 2. The male managers would get drafted and then got replaced by untrained men who would become drafted and repeat while the women did all the work on the floor and never got promoted. That gave Elizabeth the first taste of wanting equal rights. She attended cosmetology school with a desire to enter the funeral business. Through connections she met Lloyd Rost and they were married and owned and operated the Rost Funeral Home in Lakefield, MN from 1949 until retirement. She received her funeral director license from the State of Minnesota.
In the late 50’s, her mother-in-law fractured a hip. Dr. Doman sent her home with a book from Sister Kennedy on rehabilitation. At that time Elizabeth saw the need for a facility for elderly in Lakefield, thereby her and Bertha Grein began a campaign for a senior care facility which eventually led to a referendum which passed creating Colonial Manor. Another community project she was interested in was the new Lakefield Library and along with other leaders of Lakefield it came to be. She was always proud on Ladies Book Club of how many people young and old were using the facility.
She was very active in the Methodist Church, and continued to be active in the community until July when she entered the Sanford Hospice Program at home and passed on December 21, 2020 at the age of 96 years, 10 months, the day of the Christmas Star.
She is survived by her son, Hennan (Cynthia); grandchildren, Jennifer (Roy) Robbins, Andrew (Kristine) Katona, and Anthony (Gina) Katona; ten great-grandchildren; three great- great grandchildren; brother, Hulit Jr. (June) and nephews and families from Bogart, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd and her parents.
God Bless Her Memory.
Burial will be at a later date.
Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
