Obituary for Elden Charles Ponto

Worthington, MN

Elden Charles Ponto, was born on February 16, 1932, in a rural home in Summit Lake Township, the son of Albert and Cora Ponto. When he was two weeks old, his family moved to a farm west of Reading where he grew up and later farmed with his father and took over the operation. He attended grade school in Reading, graduated from Worthington High School, and attended Worthington Community College.
Elden married his high school sweetheart, Mary Ann Morfitt, on September 29, 1951. They farmed together until 1978 when they retired and moved to Worthington. They loved to travel, spending several weeks in different foreign countries and enjoyed dancing together. After his wife’s death in 1985, he returned to work as a paralegal at a law office in Worthington. He was a school board member and president of the PTA in Reading, was a partner/owner of many real estate properties including the State Bank of Worthington in the 1970’s and president of the State Agency Inc. He continued to enjoy dancing, teaching dancing on cruise ships all over the world as well as at the Worthington Coliseum Ballroom. He was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church for 65 years where he served on various boards. He spent 27 winters in Arizona and was active in his church there and enjoyed dancing during the winter season. Elden passed away on Thursday, June 2, 2016, at Agapé Hospice House in Columbia, SC.
Elden is survived by his children, Greg (Sandy) Ponto of Reading, MN, Richard (Deb) Ponto of Lexington, SC, and Susan (Robert) Quinlan of Waterloo, IA; nine grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren, and multiple nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Cora Ponto; his wife, Mary Ann, and his siblings, Carl Ponto, Elsie Price, Gert Meinders, and Evelyn Behrens.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2016, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Worthington, MN, with Pastor Mark Schreiber officiating. Burial will be in the Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Friday, June 10, 2016, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
