Obituary for Elaine Aurella Sternke

Worthington, Minnesota      Elaine Aurella Sternke, 91, of Worthington, died on Friday, April 13th, 2007, at the Sunset Hospice Cottage in Worthington, MN.     She was born on June 7th, 1915, in Brookings County, SD.  She was the daughter of Grant and Anna Johnson.  She graduated from Hendricks High School in 1934 and took teacher training at Madison, SD and at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD.  She then taught in a one-room school house.  She married Alvin Walter Sternke on June 6th, 1942, in Hendricks, MN.     Alvin and Elaine farmed in the Minneota area before moving to Worthington at which time they purchased the Tot Shop.  After selling the Tot Shop, Elaine assisted Alvin who was a Jewel Tea salesman.  She later was employed in special education by the Worthington School District 518.     Alvin and Elaine enjoyed working together.  They re-upholstered furniture for many in the community, and made llama feed bags.  They enjoyed traveling, camping, and visiting family and friends -  and making new friends.     Elaine was active in her community and at the First Lutheran Church.  She had a gift for hospitality along with a real interest and love for people.  She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.     She was preceded in death by her parents, four siblings, one grandchild, and her husband who passed away on October 6th, 1993.     Elaine leaves behind a large, loving family including six children, Walter (Dianne) Sternke, Atlanta, GA, Jeanette (Bruce) Kallevig, Monticello, MN, Margaret (Richard) Olson, La Crosse, WI, Gladys (Stan) Selander, Elk River, MN, Ronald (Sheryl) Sternke, Worthington, MN, and Bruce (Sol) Sternke, Salina, KA; twenty-four grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.     Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 17, 2007, at 11:00 a.m., at the First Lutheran Church in Worthington, MN, with the Rev. Richard Ricker officiating.  Elaine’s grandsons, Jason Kallevig, Matthew Olson, Andrew Sternke, Jesse Sternke, Nathan Selander, and Karl Selander served as casket bearers.  Burial was in the Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
