Obituary for Edna Carmel Anderson

Worthington, MN

Edna Anderson passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2015, at the Crossroads Care Center in Worthington, MN. She passed on to her eternal home in Heaven at 6:00 a.m.

Edna Carmel Ahlberg was born to Enoch and Mabel (Johnson) Ahlberg on the family farm near Slayton, MN on March 7, 1917 during a bad winter storm. She was the oldest of 5 children. Her family lived in Stanchfield and Mora, before returning to Worthington. She attended a country school through the eighth grade and then stayed home to help with younger siblings, farm chores, and worked in the kitchen.

She married Paul Oscar Anderson, son of Eric and Anna Anderson, on October 20, 1945 in Worthington. They had 4 children, Dennis, twins, Judy and Joyce, and Elaine. Edna worked at the Worthington Hospital, South Shore Nursing Home, cleaned houses, and took in baking orders for her breads and cookies. She worked at The Band Shell Music Store until her retirement. She was a great seamstress, making most of her clothes and her daughters. Edna was famous for her Swedish rye bread, doughnuts, pies, cinnamon rolls, and cookies.

She was an active member at the First Covenant Church in Worthington, where she served as a Sunday School teacher, taught VBS, member of the Beacon Bible Class, played the piano and was assistant organist. She enjoyed singing in the choir and also in duets. Keeping active in various other volunteer positions was important in the life of Edna. She was a very hard worker.

Edna enjoyed being hospitable and always had friends over for lunch after the Turkey Day Parade. Her hugs were welcomed by many! She loved playing table games like Skip-Bo and Sorry. Watching the MN Twins baseball games was one of her favorite past times.

Edna is survived by her son, Dennis of Worthington, and daughter, Joyce (Brian) O’Neil of Apple Valley, MN, two granddaughters, Jennifer (Matthew) Weimann, of Norwell, MA and Emily (Stuart) Voeller of Prairie City, IA. She had 6 great grandchildren: Shelby (13) and Trey (10) Voeller, Rachel (12), Erica (11), Michael (10), and David (8) Weimann and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Alder, Phil, and Dale, her sister, Doris, and her husband, Paul, and two daughters, Elaine, and Judy.

Visitation and viewing will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2015, at 10:00 a.m., followed by a service at 11:00 a.m., at the Benson Funeral Home Chapel in Worthington, MN. Burial will be in the Worthington Cemetery.
