Obituary for Edgar John August Schultz

Round Lake, MN

     Edgar John August Schultz, 91, was born on December 23, 1920, in Rost Township, Jackson County, Minnesota, the son of Ernest and Marie (Hage) Schultz. He attended school in Rost Township and began working as a hired farm hand for neighbors at the age of 12. Edgar was drafted into the United States Army in September of 1942 and served in the Army’s 462nd Anti-Aircraft Division until his discharge in November of 1945. He received a number of service medals and good conduct bars. One bar is decorated with five small, gold stars - one to signify each of the five battles he served in: Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. In 2005, 60 years after the war ended, he was honored with the Medal of the Jubilee of Liberty in a ceremony in Worthington. Edgar married Anna Onken on July 11, 1943, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Rost Township. After their marriage, they farmed in Ewington Township and then in Indian Lake Township. Edgar was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Worthington. He was also a life member of the Round Lake Legion Post 461 and the National Rifleman’s Association. He enjoyed fishing and hunting every year since his time in the military. Edgar died on Monday, December 26, 2011, at the Good Samaritan Society - Sogge in Windom, MN.
     Edgar is survived by his wife, Anna of Round Lake, MN; two brothers, Norman Schultz of Titus, AL, and Allan Schultz of Lakefield, MN, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Alvin, Walter, Roy, and Arnold Schultz, and two sisters, Bertha Barkheim and Delores Rosenbrook.
     Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 3, 2012, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Worthington, MN, with Rev. Tom Braun officiating. Casket bearers will be Norm Armstrong, Larry Yeske, Lyle Heath, Randy Wilson, Don Malenke, and Gordon Heitkamp. Burial will be held in the Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Monday, January 2, 2012, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington.
