Obituary for Dr. Jeffrey Lee Bern

Worthington, Minnesota      Dr. Jeff Bern, age 41, died in a motor vehicle accident on April 26, 2007, in Plankinton, SD.  Born on October 6, 1965, in Gold Beach, OR, he was the son of Myrle and Laura Jenkins Bern.  Jeff graduated from Marshfield High School in Coos Bay, OR, in 1984.  He served his country as a hospital corpsman in the United States Navy from 1984 to 1989.  Jeff returned to Coos Bay where he married Martha “Marty” V. Carpenter on August 24, 1990.  Shortly, after their marriage they moved to eastern South Dakota.  Jeff studied microbiology and received his B.S. degree from South Dakota State University in 1995.  He then studied medicine at the University of South Dakota earning his MD in 1999.  He completed Family Practice residence training at the University of Wyoming, Casper, in 2002.  Jeff is remembered as many things, husband, father, friend, and doctor.  He was passionate in his activities.  He loved to play golf.  Jeff was also a hockey fan, a great fisherman, hunter, bowler, guitar player, and did I mention golfer. He also played professional racquetball. Jeff loved the holidays and will be known in Worthington, MN, as “the doctor who carved all those pumpkins.”     Jeff is survived by his wife, Marty, of Worthington, MN; his son, Brady and two daughters, Genevieve and Abigail; his father, Myrle Bern, of Coos Bay, OR, and three brothers, Jim Bern, of Coos Bay, Greg Bern, of Powers, OR, and Mike (Patricia) Bern, of Eureka, CA.  He was preceded in death by his mother, Laura Bern.     Memorial services will be held at the Worthington Middle School gymnasium on Tuesday, May 1, 2007, at 6:30 p.m., with Pastor James Sickmeyer officiating.  Fellowship will be held at the Worthington Baptist Temple immediately following the service.  An Educational Trust Fund has been set up for the children’s secondary education.  Memorials may be sent in care of Benson Funeral Home, PO Box 626, Worthington, MN  56187.
