Obituary for Dorothy Emilea Akerson

Worthington, MN

Dorothy Emilea Wicklund Akerson died at the Crossroads Care Center on March 27, 2015 at the age of 96. She was born on July 19, 1918, to Peter Emil and Anna Lillstrom Wicklund in Pine River, MN, the youngest of 9 children. She graduated from South High School in Minneapolis, MN, in 1935. Her first employment was with Investor Syndicate in Minneapolis, and then in Seattle, WA. She married Phillip L. I. Akerson in April of 1942, and was widowed in September of 1944. She attended and graduated from The Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis and went to work as the Parish Worker for Diamond Lake Lutheran Church in Minneapolis in 1950. To many she became “Diamond Lake Church”. In 1981 she retired from her position at Diamond Lake and moved to Worthington, MN to live with her daughter and family. She was active in her First Lutheran Church Circle, learned to play the piano, to play Bridge, joined an aquanatics class at the YMCA, was on a bowling league team, and was a member of the Worthington Garden Club. In 2008 she moved to the Reflections Unit of the Crossroads Care Center. Dorothy loved her family, her Church, and her friends. She became “Granny” to all her Grandchildren’s friends and was happiest when with friends and relatives. She could find relatives anywhere she went given enough time to talk about connections.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 6 brothers and 2 sisters and their spouses. She is survived by her daughter, Linda (Keith) Towne, Worthington, Grandson, Brian (Carrie Obry) Towne, St. Paul, Granddaughter, Jennifer (Doug) Brands, Worthington, and Great-Grandsons, Kalen, Charles, and Tobias Brands and Henry Theilen Towne, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, April 1, 2015, at 11:00 a.m., at the First Lutheran Church in Worthington, MN, with Pastor Brian Bergin officiating.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorials preferred to the Alzheimer’s Association, First Lutheran Church or Diamond Lake Lutheran Church.
