Obituary for Dorothea Joyce Gade

Okabena, Minnesota      Dorothea Joyce Gade, 84, of Okabena, Minnesota, was born on October 24, 1923, at her home in West Heron Lake Township.  She was the daughter of William and Leona DeMoure Hartman.  Dorothea graduated from Okabena High School and attended nursing school. At the start of World War II, she worked in the war effort at Hunters Point, San Francisco, California, as one of many “Rosie the Riveters”.  Dorothea married Raymond W. Gade on May 4, 1947, at Ewington Lutheran Church.  After marriage, they farmed in Weimer Township.  She worked at the Heron Lake Hospital as a cook and also a nurse’s aide.  After their retirement, they moved to Okabena, where her and Ray enjoyed making crafts.  Faith, family, and friends were very important to her.  Dorothea died on Friday February 29, 2008, at the Worthington Regional Hospital.     Dorothea is survived by two sons, Dennis (Joanne) Gade, of San Francisco, California, and Ed (Shirley) Gade of Rockford, Illinois; one daughter, Barbara Gade of Plymouth, Minnesota; four grandchildren, Stephen (Jessie) Gade, Robin Gade, Rachael (Randy) Carlton, and Raymond (Marci) Gade, and five great grandsons, Drew Carlton, Lucas Carlton, Elijah Carlton, Ray Gade, and Micah Carlton.  She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her brother, Russell (Buddy) Hartman.     Memorial service will be on Tuesday, March 4, 2008, at 11:00 a.m., at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Okabena, Minnesota, with Pastor James Albrecht officiating.   Visitation will be from 10-11:00 am at the church on Tuesday.  Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is coordinating the arrangements.
