Obituary for David Dean Young

Princeton, Minnesota      David Dean Young, 64, of Princeton, Minnesota, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, May 15, 2007, after collapsing at Majors bar and restaurant where he was playing trivia with friends.     Dave was raised in Brewster, the son of Hazel and Monroe Young.  He graduated from Brewster High School in 1960, then attended Worthington Junior College for 2 years.  He lived for a short time in Cedar Rapids, IA, then moved to New Brighton in the Minneapolis area until a couple of years ago when he moved to Princeton.     Dave was a “people person”. His attitude was always upbeat and friendly.  He loved meeting people.  When asked how things were going for him, he always said “fabulous!”  His friends said he was kind and never said a bad word about anybody.     His life was about “having fun.”  He loved stand up comedy. He did some acts himself, but didn’t seek a career in comedy.  He frequented the local venues, laughing and inspiring the audience, and socializing with the performers, meeting many stars in the process.  He was also an occasional WCCO personality.     David loved driving and had a series of “jalopies” that often needed repair and were loaded with gear. He delivered pizza for over 25 years in the Twin Cities, which also gave him a chance to meet people.  He had other jobs involving driving including that of a school bus.     Some other things he did for fun were ham radio, and flying Cessna type planes.     Another hobby was electronics.  He loved gadgets, games and computers. He liked to work on computers for friends and relatives.     A favorite thing Dave liked to do was the Treasure hunt for the medallion during the St. Paul Winter Carnival. He was a member of the “Cooler Crew” and used his ham radio to help in the hunt. He is one of the featured stars in a documentary about the Treasure Hunt called “No time for Cold Feet.”     In December he became “Santa Dave”. With his white beard and infectious laugh, he entertained at private parties and outdoor venues.     Dave was also very interested in family matters, maintained contact with many relatives and spread the word about family events.  He was always willing to help someone out. He researched family genealogy, and traveled to England and Ireland with family to check records.  He did video documentation of stories by an elderly cousin Bessie Whelan.     He is survived by a sister, Martha Young of Kanab, Utah.     Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 25, 2007, at 1:30 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington, Minnesota, with the Rev. Robert Bartlett officiating.  Burial will be in the Worthington Cemetery.  Visitation will be held on Friday, May 25, 2007, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home.
