Obituary for Darlene Jewel Broste

Funeral service will be live on the Benson Funeral Home Facebook page.

Darlene Jewel Duba, age 86, was placed in Jesus arms on Thursday, July 9, 2020 at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale, MN.
Darlene was born August 27, 1933 to Merle and Mabel (Gustafson) Duba. Her daddy looked at her and said “You are my darling jewel”. That light shined throughout her lifetime.
Darlene graduated from Worthington High School in 1951. She twirled her baton under the lights of Trojan Field. She later attended Worthington Junior College.
On June 11, 1955, she married Clayton D. Horstman. Together they added two gems. The first gem was a topaz, Linda Dianne and the second was a pink tourmaline, Debra Marie. Clayton died August 1, 1960.
Burton R. Broste discovered this jewel and married Darlene on May 2, 1964. This union added two additional gems to complete this family, an emerald, Raydell Kay and garnet, Gary Allen. Burton died on December 26, 2005.
A beacon of light in her faith, Darlene was an active member of American Lutheran Church. She taught Bethel Bible series, Sunday School, Church School, and Summer Bible School. Her other church involvement included serving on committees, church circle and attending services. Being passionate about others, she was a leader in PEO, Chapter BT.
While living on Lake Okabena she hosted many card parties, dinners, and picnics filled with family and friends. An avid card player, Darlene was very competitive and occasionally a little opinionated. Each summer was enjoyed with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who added a special sparkle to her heart. Times spent on the shores of Lake Okabena included boating, swimming, skiing, ice skating, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Traveling throughout the United States, Europe and South America she would sometime swing a golf club. Each morning you could find her enjoying family and friends over a cup of coffee sometimes followed by a workout at the YMCA.
Darlene Jewel was an encourager and supported new challenges and endeavors. She was a gem. May her light continue to shine in the lives she touched.
Survived by children Raydell (Mike) Kleve, New Hope, MN, Gary (Dorothy) Broste, Bemidji, MN, Linda (John) Ekers, Maple Grove, MN and Debra (Doug) Harberts, Bella Vista, AR.
