Obituary for Daniel Joseph Marki

Daniel Joseph Marki, 49, of Brewster, MN, died unexpectedly on July 1, 2021. Born on March 16, 1972, in Oil City, Pennsylvania, Dan was the son of Derek and Judy (Kulinski) Marki. When he was 6-years old, he moved to Worthington, MN, along with his mother and younger brother, Bob. He attended St. Mary’s School and graduated from Worthington Senior High in 1991.
Dan began his work career in the construction trades. He was employed by various area contractors, including Mid-State’s Utilities out of Slayton, MN. During this time, he met and married Lynette Schumacher; they had two sons, Lee and Lance.
Dan worked his way up the construction trades “career ladder”, becoming a skilled operator of heavy equipment and a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers. For several years he traveled the State, working for different employers on ”union-scale” projects involving the installation of underground, sewer/water infrastructure. He took pride in being able to handle large power equipment, including backhoes, bulldozers, and payloaders.
Unfortunately, the stress of working on the road and being away from his family led to the breakup of his marriage. As a single father, Dan looked for other more local employment, assisting area farmers with planting/harvesting, driving grain and feed trucks, and working for a time at the JBS pork processing plant. Most recently, he was employed by a private security company to help enforce COVID masking rules at retail sites.
For over twenty years, Dan was confronted by health issues which sometimes made daily living a struggle. He experienced complications in managing his diabetes and underwent a quadruple bypass a few years ago.
He was able to find enjoyment in some of life’s more simple pleasures - watching American Pickers, Pawn Stars, and Vikings football on TV and trying out new recipes in the kitchen. Dan was also a proud owner of a Chevy pickup truck. He particularly enjoyed socializing with friends, and he had a special compassion for reaching out to family members and older individuals who were coping with life challenges.
It had been years since Dan had been able to experience the enjoyment of going on a true vacation. Fortunately, he was able to spend the last few weeks of his life on an extended excursion to Oregon where he was able to see mountains and whales, go ocean fishing for halibut, and take in a few car races with his new-found friends. He was happier than he had been in a long time and had even mentioned the possibility of relocating there.
Dan is survived by two sons, Lee (Jasmine) Marki, and Lance Marki, all of Lake Park, Iowa. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Lilly and Lincoln Marki, Lake Park; his brother, Bob (Stacy) Marki, Fargo, ND; his uncle, Dan Marki, Oil City, PA; two half-sisters, Katie and Susan, a step-sister, Jamie; and his parents, Jerry and Judy Fiola, Worthington. He was preceded in death by his father, Derek, and his grandparents.
A celebration of Dan’s life will be held on Saturday, July 24, at Benson Funeral Home, Worthington. A family visitation time is scheduled for 9:00 - 10:00 a.m., with a memorial service to follow, officiated by Father Jim Callahan. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages individuals to make a donation to the American Diabetes Association, or to give a contribution in Dan’s name to a charitable organization of their choice.
