Obituary for Clifford Douglas Zimmerman

Windom, Minnesota

     Clifford Douglas Zimmerman, 80, was born on June 14, 1929, in Sanborn, MN, the son of George and Emma (Haeske) Zimmerman. He worked for the railroad for a couple of years and helped out area farmers. He served in the Korean Conflict as a Rifleman in the US Army Infantry. Clifford married Joyce Miller on June 13, 1954, in Lamberton, MN. After their marriage, they moved to Hibbing, MN, where he worked on the Iron Range until being laid off. They then returned to the area, where he worked for the grocery store in Lamberton, MN, and then the brickyard in Springfield, MN. In 1967, he began working for the DNR in Windom, MN, as a Fisheries Technician. Clifford was an avid cribbage player, winning several tournaments and had the privilege of playing checkers with Joe Lewis, the boxer. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, and spending time at the Senior Center. Clifford also enjoyed his family pets, Figaro the cat, Willie the turtle, and his favorite dogs, Thunder and Samantha. He loved to visit with people and spend time with his family. He recently received the Mayor’s Medal of Honor. Clifford died on Tuesday, January 19, 2010, at the Windom Area Hospital in Windom, MN.
     Clifford is survived by his wife, Joyce of Windom, MN; four children, Debbie (Jeff) Weber of Madelia, MN, Jill (Ellard) Holmbeck of Olive Branch, MS, Chris Zimmerman of Windom, MN, and Craig Zimmerman of Windom, MN; ten grandchildren; five great grandchildren; three brothers, LeRoy (Norma) Zimmerman of Granite Falls, MN, Virgle Zimmerman of Sanborn, MN, and Clinton Zimmerman of Sanborn, MN, and one sister-in-law, Leona Zimmerman of Sanborn, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, one sister, and his daughter-in-law, Katie.
     Memorial services will be held on Friday, January 22, 2010, at 2:00 p.m., at the American Lutheran Church in Windom, MN, with Rev. Ron Letnes officiating.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Friday.

Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
