Obituary for Clayton Ralph Harberts

Reading, MN

Clayton Ralph Harberts, 77, died on November 15, 2015, at the Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Fulda, MN. He was born on August 2, 1938, in Worthington to Ralph and Esther (Versulis) Harberts. He was united in marriage to Liz McCoy on November 21, 1959, in Tracy, MN. They raised four children, Greg, Ralph, Mike, and Jacque on a farm near Reading, MN where his wife still resides.

Clayton graduated from Worthington High School in 1957 and went on to serve in the U.S Army. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army under hardship due to his father’s death when he returned home to take over the farm. He farmed until he retired.

He also enjoyed playing cards, pool, fast-pitch softball, and spending time at the elevator with his friends. He was a longtime member of the Elks. Liz and he also enjoyed traveling together on short trips including to Branson to watch the entertainment. He loved baseball and his favorite team was the New York Yankees. Until recent years, Liz and he never missed a trip to the Minnesota State Fair where he spent time up on Machinery Hill. In his later years, he loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren and attended many of their activities.

Clayton is survived by his wife of 56 years, Liz; son Greg (Tammy) and grandsons Cole and Dane; his son Mike (Lois) and grandchildren Amber (Daniel Frisch), Nathan (Ashley Balster), and Brian (Karlie), his daughter Jacque Keller (Kevin), and granddaughters, Michaela and Meredith, 6 great-grandchildren (Ayden, Blaine, Laylah, Lydia, Maverick and Ava); brother Norman, and sisters and brothers-in-law Raymond and Beatrice Maeyaert, Bob and Rosella Truwe, Jim and Irene McCoy, and Margaret Goedtke. He was preceded in death by his son (Ralph), parents, his brother (Gordon) and his brother-in-law, Dell Goedtke. He was also preceded in death by many of his childhood friends, close friends, and neighbors.

He is fondly remembered for his devotion to his family, love of farming, his sense of humor, his many gator rides, making popcorn balls, surprise visits from Santa, and his never ending bag of chocolate covered peanuts. He is remembered for his gift of gab at the elevator, countless cups of coffee with neighbors and Uncle George and his life-long friendship with Andy Slone.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 18, 2015, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Worthington, MN, with Father Jim Callahan officiating. Clayton’s grandchildren will serve as casket bearers and his great grandchildren will serve as honorary casket bearers. Burial, with military honors, will be in the Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 17, 2015, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington, MN and also one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
