Obituary for Clair Dean Calvin

Clair Dean Calvin of San Jose, CA and Worthington, MN passed away on January 13, 2019 in Santa Clara, CA. Clair was born in Worthington, MN on October 15, 1932 to Ray and Minnie (Moss) Calvin. He attended Worthington Schools and was active with the gymnastic team and FFA. He was also involved in 4-H and raised Suffix Sheep. He attended Boys Camp and later, Rural Youth. After Clair enlisted in the Air Force in January 1953, he completed his Basic Training in San Antonio, Texas and attended Air Traffic Control School in Biloxi, Mississippi. On August 5, 1953, he returned to marry his high school sweetheart, LaVonne Gordon.
Clair was stationed at Offitt Air Force Base in South Omaha, March Air Force Base in Riverside, California and Allbrook Air Force Base in the Panama Canal Zone. After his time in the service, his interest in airplanes developed; he attended Worthington Junior College and the University of Minnesota, where he graduated with an Aeronautical Engineering Degree. Later, he got his Master’s Degree from University of Southern California. During his career, he worked with the Apollo program and was a TRW contractor for NASA. After that, he worked with the Government “CIA” on the Corona and Gambit Spy satellites. Clair also worked on Air Force satellites and on the X-15 at North American Aviation.
Clair loved his family, enjoyed doing his own home projects, woodworking, traveling, camping, and his Mooney airplane. He was involved in Y-Indian-Guides and Boy Scouts. He was a member of the local Calvin-Knuth American Legion. Clair and Vonnie were members of the Brethren Church.
His survivors include his wife, LaVonne of 65 years; sons, Loren (Suzanne) Calvin of Klamath Falls, OR and Douglas Calvin of Gateway, OR; daughters, Becky Hill and Susan Calvin, both of Ellensburg, WA; two sisters, Carol Mrozik of St. Paul, MN and Judy Luing of Worthington, MN; one brother, Jim (Kay) Calvin of Oak Park, MN; sister-in-law, Donna Lu Anderson of Phoenix, AZ; six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Minnie Calvin; two brothers, Bob Calvin and Paul Calvin; sister-in-law, Lorraine Calvin; and three brothers-in-law, Max Mrozik, Buell Luing and Don Lambert.
A private burial will be held. The memorial service will be held at the Church of the Brethren, Reading, MN on April 27, 2019 at 12:30.
The family wants to express their thanks for the many expressions of kindness and sympathy.
