Obituary for Charlotte Mary Cotter

Charlotte Mary (Sitar) Cotter was born on May 16, 1931 in Minneapolis, MN to Frank and Katherine Sitar. She grew up on the family farm in Hopkins, MN graduating as salutatorian from Hopkins High School class of 1949. Charlotte graduated from the College of St. Benedict with degrees in history, English, philosophy and education.
Charlotte taught in Brewster for 4 years, later returning as a substitute teacher for 15 years. Charlotte married Richard Cotter in 1955. They had 7 children: MaryElla (Allan) Clouse, Oliva, MN; Cathleen (Kenneth) Heim, Minnetonka, MN; Amy (Stephan) Zapf, Sauk Rapids, MN; Margaret Mary Cotter (deceased); Timothy Cotter, Brewster, MN; Thomas Cotter, Heron Lake, MN and Joseph (Kari) Cotter, Lakeville, MN. Charlotte has 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Charlotte and her husband ran Dicks Food Market for 34 years. She was active in the community serving as a Girl Scout leader for 4 years and secretary of the Brewster Community Club. Charlotte taught religion classes at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for 35 years, served as treasurer of the Council of Catholic Women, secretary of the Lakefield-Jackson Deanery, secretary of the Worthington Area and Family Affairs Chair on the Winona Diocesan Board.
Because of her work on family affairs, Charlotte was invited to the Minnesota White House Conference on Families. An effective speaker and writer, Charlotte championed the cause of economic justice for the poor and small businesses against corporate giants.
A published poet and author, Charlotte delighted in writing stories for her grandchildren. Her autobiographical work, Rock Hill Farm, relates to the stories of her childhood and how truck farming was done before tractors and mechanization changed the family farm.
Charlotte passed away on Monday, December 24, 2018 at the South Shore Care Center in Worthington, MN. Charlotte is also survived by her siblings, Virginia Risley, Patricia Carroll and Katherine Bury. She was preceded in death by parents, Frank and Katherine Sitar and siblings, Lorraine Wyman, Frank Sitar and Shirley Ingraham.
Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2018, at 11:00 a.m., at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Brewster, MN, with Father Pratap Reddy Salibindla officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Brewster.
Visitation will be held on Friday, December 28, 2018, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a 6:30 p.m. time of sharing by family and friends and a 7:00 p.m. rosary, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Brewster, MN, and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
Arrangements are with Benson Funeral Home is Worthington.
