Obituary for Charles Fredrick William Kraft

Worthington, MN

Charles Fredrick William Kraft, “Charlie Kraft”, 88, was born on February 5, 1924 on the Kraft family farm near Brewster, MN, the son of George and Sadie (Brink) Kraft. When he was eight years old he started attending the Faribault State School in Faribault, MN. As he approached his teen years he was able to spend his summers at home in the Brewster area and started to work on the Joe Kunerth family farm. At age 16 he decided to work full time on the Kunerth farm and did not return to the Faribault School. Charlie lived in a cabin on the Kunerth farm where he worked as a farm hand. He participated in all of the activities of a busy farm including both crop and animal production and food preservation of meat, fruits and vegetables. He grew geese and ducks and sold them for extra income. He was able to visit family in Worthington weekly. He enjoyed children and spent time entertaining his nieces and nephews. He was a cheerful, friendly fellow that smiled and joked freely. He appreciated a good meal and had a real sweet tooth; he loved to end the traditional Sunday dinner with a piece of homemade pie. Charlie looked forward to annual hunting and fishing trips to Northern Minnesota where he and his brother Ray spent time with the families of their sisters who lived there. Charlie spent the bulk of his working days at the Joe Kunerth farm and became close to that family and they treated him in many ways like one of their family. He moved to the Florian Kunerth farm for a few years where he also worked as a farm hand and then moved back to the Joe Kunerth farm where he stayed until he retired from farming and moved to Worthington. He lived in several group homes in Worthington, MN after he left farming. During that time he worked for The Achievement Center in the wood shop. He liked to work with wood, acquired wood working tools and made several types of wooden crafts like shelves and napkin holders in his spare time. He enjoyed having bird houses around his home and watching the birds that would flock to them. Charlie continued to live in a group home in Worthington and looked forward to visits as well as outings with family and friends. Charlie died on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.
Charlie is survived by one brother, Raymond Kraft of Brewster, MN and one sister, Marie (Robert) North of Riverside, CA and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Elizabeth Kraft, Mamie Saathoff, Ruth Kunerth, and Christina Spillman; and one brother, Robert Kraft.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 26, 2012, at 10:00 a.m., at the Benson Funeral Home Chapel in Worthington, MN, with Pastor Joe Behnke officiating. Burial will be held in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery near Brewster, MN.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 26, 2012, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to CCSI - House 1060 in Worthington.
